Is this a Hungarian dessert? In Croatia we call it Mađarica (Mađar/Mogyar)

  1. Is the top hard, or soft? You see, I’m not a specialist in this subject, but I can safely say, that I know some.

    in the case, that the top is hard its a *drum(er) cake* / *dobos torta*

    if otherwise, its most likely *serbo* / *zserbó*

    correct me if I said something incorrect!

  2. Its not zserbo, its called hatlapos (6 layers) and this is the version with chocolate as 6th layer

  3. It is similar to the hungarian zserbo cake, except that the filling is jam and nuts, and only on top is chocolate and consists of three layers of dough.

  4. Yes. But I make it with six dough sheet, filling caramell or chocolate cream. Strange, that ammonium-hydrogencarbonate needs for the dough, not baking powder. Really bad smell, when it bake..

As others have mentioned, it looks like [Hatlapos sütemény](https://cookpad.com/hu/receptek/1924747-hatlapos) (“cake with six layers” – often made with only five layers)*,* which is a very common dessert although it used to be more popular in the 80s, and it’s not something that we think of as traditionally or specially Hungarian. The cream is made with milk, cocoa powder and butter or sometimes chocolate pudding.
    Zserbó, which is probably the cake that comes to mind when you ask for a traditional Hungarian cake, looks the same but that has walnuts and jam in it.

  7. Some people here tell you it is related to our ‘hatlapos’ but AFAIK the recipe differs a lot (no ammonia in Mađarice thankfully). I’ve eaten both, Mađarica wins.

  8. Na internetu pise da nije iz madjarske samo se tako zove, srpsko-hrvatsko je poreklo, sad ja licno nznm iako sam sama ,,madjarica” xd
    Edit: mslm da na balkanu svaki narod pravi ovaj kolac samo svi zovu drugacije
