The IRA didn’t have to murder as many Irish women and children – I’d concede that.
That lad is a headcase though; it’s up to you if you want to let him upset you.
Is he the son of Irish immigrants. How did they have time to put in the inbred toff genes between generations?
The rise of the UVF and the Ulster Solemn League and Covenant came about in opposition to moderate Redmonite home rule, not outright physical force republicanism. That even the most moderate of unionists in the six counties seems to have no problem justifying Crawford’s gun running at Larne is a perfect example that many of these people are selective in their outrage about political violence. Are they decrying the threat of ‘immediate and terrible war’ by Lloyd George during the Anglo-Irish Treaty negotiations? Admonishing James Craig for his support of the early Belfast pogroms?
Michelle O’Neil was not wrong, although her remarks were too tempered. Legitimate armed struggle was both warranted and necessitated, less there be a repeat of what happened at Bombay Street.
If the British didn’t have an addiction to other people’s countries there would never have been an IRA.
Jesus – he conveniently glosses over the fact that the cause of the violence in the first place was the Brits. I mean, you can’t oppress people through violence and not expect some violence in return, can you?
United States citizen here, is the entire IRA campaign controversial in Ireland?
I’ve always been under the impression that most of the damage to the cause came when more innocent folks got caught in the crossfire in the 80s and 90s.
Unionists voting to leave the EU put the GFA at risk. Unionist not allowing Stormont to proceed puts the GFA at risk
If Michelle O’Neill said that the IRA had no alternative During the troubles.
If the army shoots people dead in the street and there is no legal recourse for their families or legal repercussions for the people doing the shootings I would argue at a certain point violence is an acceptable alternative. After The Good Friday agreement there are legal structures to prevent discrimination based on religion and controls on the police.
Also Sinn fein and the IRA were not major groups in the Civl rights marches they were smaller political group tagging along they only became more influential as a result of the actions of the British security forces
Rich coming from a Brit.
IRA only exsits becuse Brits couldn’t stop, taking what doesn’t belong to them.
Flipping IRA attacking the peaceful and calming influence of the British Army, the UDR, the RUC,UDA, UVF,Red Hand Commandos, Orange Order……..Every Unionist official in government offices who felt it their god givt right to make sure Catholics got the shitty houses, jobs, school buses etc.
Yes, terrible.things were done. But by BOTH sides.
Well so does Michelle O’Neill. John Hume showed what the alternative was.
This Moylan chap is a cretin anyway, every single thing see says seems to be wrong.
While he’s at it he should tell the Ukrainians to stop fighting back against Russia.
Not really sure where he thinks SF are trying to get rid of the GFA? There are many examples of Unionist parties trying to go against the GFA.
It was a silly comment whether you agree with it or not for MON to make because it just handed the DUP amo to justify not going back into Stormont. This is nothing but distraction from what we really need.
GET TO WORK!! We are coming into Winter with an energy crisis. Stop this back and forth of nonsense and do the job you were elected to do.
The brits were the aggressors, but just looking at SF, he’s not wrong
Just glossing over the whole reason the IRA rose and that was purely because of the British rulers addiction to blood, murdering innocents, stealing from the hungry, and 300+ years of oppression
