NUI Galway Accommodation Crisis on Six One News today

  1. I was in Cúirt na Coiribe years ago for college. Most of the rooms are not big enough to put a twin/ bunk into. They’re tight enough for single beds even.

  2. Might as well get them use to a housing crisis now. It’s not gonna get better for them after they graduate unless people vote for change,

  3. They’ll have to put on as many remote learning classes as possible, so students can at least do some of their learning without having to be on campus. I dunno, they’re gonna need to think outside the box a lot for this.

Like I’ve pictured some weird scenario whereby students could rent a room for a week or two, do their on-campus classes/work for that period, then go back to home (not student rental) for a couple of weeks and continue with remote classes/lessons/etc. Honestly, I don’t think this is practical, or a good learning experience for the students, or just a good experience in general, but jaysus some thing has to be done. Smart people need to figure out smart solutions and fast.

  4. Interesting that this story is relegsted to an interest piece on a weekend news bulletin that no one will see.

Seems to be the narrative about anything to do with housing.

  5. Jesus, Theresa, missing the point altogether. Capacity increased?! Its the cost!!! What are they like in RTE? Gort Na Coiribe built back in the noughties. 100% pure profit at this stage.

  6. Would better train links to the city not make sense now more than ever. Hourly services that allow people to get in and out of the city from surrounding towns?

  7. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again 70% of students shouldn’t be anywhere near third level. The amount of wasters going into these degree mills and making a mockery of once very well respected disciplines has been fucking disastrous for the worth of degrees. University should be hard as fuck to get into. Want to study English? You need an A2 at honours, don’t have it? Well tough luck or go and do a PLC and get a 2:1 and try your luck. I can’t fathom how NUIG must be licking their lips every time you get a yank or Canadian paying full price to do a fucking BA Connect in Creative writing, they must be laughing.

  8. Very unfair for foreugn students who booked these rooms in advance and now they been asked to share with strangers. It’s like having to share a hotel room with a stranger. I would be livid if I was one of those students.
