You can’t find people before they’re vetted, if someone’s not committed a crime until after joining the police, you won’t be able to just turn them away if they tick all the other boxes in the recruitment process. (Drug test, interview etc)
Still, it’s a good thing they’re being binned and added to the barred list. He’ll never be a cop again. WMP publicised the case on Facebook too; so no hiding it on their end.
Good thing he was caught now. Could you imagine what he’d do with vulnerable victims of crime? Doesn’t bear thinking about.
No matter how robust hiring procedures are, a few nutters will make it through. Or due to life/job stress, people go off the rails once on the job.
What needs to change in policing is the close-rank mentality, no turning a blind-eye to otherwise illegal or immoral behaviour just because its another copper. You might be helping a colleague to stay in the job if you get them some support.
