Hi everyone, I am interested in doing this hike – the Jotunheimen Historical Route that starts from Gjensheim. However it is not a circular route so I was wondering how I can get back to the car? I am planning to rent a car. According to the site, the trail ends at Eidsbugarden.

Also, would anyone know if I need to book the cabins in advance, or I can just get to the end points as the website suggests and find accommodation then? I am going in mid-September.

Also, any other tips would be appreciated!

  1. I can’t access the site you linked to, it wants me to sign up. What cabins are you planning on saying at?

  2. Hey, you should do the hike the other way, park your car at Fondsbu, walk to Gjendesheim, take the bus from Gjendesheim to Bygdin, take the boat MS Bitihorn back to Fondsbu.

You can book a bed at every cabin at DNT.no or ut.no

Great source for info is ut.no

This trip could be challenging in September, be prepared for sub zero and snow, the hike from memurubu to gjendesheim is long and steep and exposed (if you have problems with hights)

  3. * If you are starting from the Oslo area, the easiest way is to leave the car there and go by train+bus to Gjendesheim and return by bus from Eidsbugarden.

    * There are boat service on both the big lakes, so you can go by boat Eidsbugarden-Bygdin and then bus Bygdin-Gjendesheim.

    * Or you can walk directly Eidsbugarden-Gjendebu (1 more day of hiking) and then go by boat Gjendebu-Gjendesheim.

You can just show up for accomodation, you will never get turned away. However since the coronavirus more people book. In general, if you are in a group or are more ridgid with dates, book. If you are solo or want more freedom to alter the route, don’t book. In September it’s plenty of room, make sure check that everything is open if you want to hike in the second half of September.
