Ireland’s 100,000+ gun owners: Who are they, where are they and what firearms do they own?

  1. >Another 42 licences for crossbows, which are sometimes used for target shooting, have also been issued since 2019.

TIL owning a crossbow requires a license,

Would be interesting to see numbers for reasons for owning a gun, didn’t see it but would be interesting to see the breakdown of the numbers

  2. Was in the garda station getting a form stamped when an auld lad came in looking to get a pistol swapped from a mate to himself. Was refreshing to see it discussed in a very casual manner. Too much fear and confusion associated with guns from the general public I think.

  3. Fella that I lived with, told me he had a gun taken off him by the guards. But he had another one ‘in storage ‘.
He is a walking talking example of a person who absolutely should not have a gun.

  4. “Bury an old gun and if you ever get in trouble with the Gards tell them you know where one is buried they’ll drop the charges to get a gun off the street”

Said casually in a convo years ago about gun ownership from a farmer 😳

I’m not even sure if that’s a valid defence strategy or getting extra charges against you tBh 😂

  5. What I found interesting recently was learning how lax the gun laws are in the Czech Republic with a very very low rate of gun crime. Lower than alot of Europe if I recall correctly. They actually have a legal right to use guns for self defence.

Every arguement on this sub just uses revolves around America in this sub when we discuss Ireland’s very strict guns laws.

  6. There’s a rifle and a shotgun in my parents house. We never take it out of the safe. I don’t even know what the key looks like.

  7. Without reading the article the answer is farmers, hunters and people involved with gun sports.

They own shotguns, small calibre rifles and a small number of handguns.

The use them for shooting pests, fowl and deer, clay pigeons and targets.

How the fuck anyone paid a journo to write this shit is beyond me.

  8. The obsession with gun control in Ireland is fascinating. It’s presented as avoiding mass shootings. The tragedies with family massacres recently will lead to further restrictions.

Historically it’s about suppressing militant republicanism.

Even the Defence forces are regarded with suspicion: to be kept out of sight and never equipped properly.

The only groups who are permanently armed are Garda detectives and members of the Garda ASU and ERU, judges and others who are deemed at danger and have personal defence weapons.

It would be very interesting to see an analysis of who makes up these groups from a demographic and historical point of view.

  9. The fact crossbows need a license got a chuckle out of me. Considering there’s no checks on the border and they are legal for anyone over a certain age in any store outside Ireland makes me feel like that alongside our fireworks laws weren’t thought through well.

The restrictions were passed after the agreement there is literally no excuse for this……also spearguns aren’t regulated which is even more ridiculous considering the mechanisms involved are identical it’s just literally legal pedantics.
