They have us by the balls really, how many of us can really survive with no heating or electricity and if we can how long can we survive for?
Na I’m okay. I’ll keep paying my bills
>A UK campaign is calling for 1million households to pledge that they will stop paying energy bills from October 1, in protest against price increases amid the cost of living crisis.
>The group, run by several anonymous activists, launched its Don’t Pay UK campaign in mid-June and, within a week, has already accrued over 4,000 people who have signed up to support the initiative.
Seems kinda pointless if they don’t even have 1% of their goal. I suppose movements have to start somewhere but let’s be honest with the fact that not all of the 4000 people who have signed are going to boycott because it’s too risky for most people.
Calls for people not to pay their bills and then claim it’s a success when people can’t actually afford to pay their bills. Laughable really that they want to people to put themselves on a debt risk list making their future harder for any loans they may require in the future
Probably why they insist on prepayment meters, they know where we are on the economic curve.
This is stupid, frankly.
First, this will in absolutely no way impact anyone with any ability to do anything here.
Second, they are IMO dangerously glossing over the potential harm to individuals from this action. Most people have no idea what the process is in terms of collection activity, and it’s on this group to inform them. They have failed to do so. More than that, they have implied that it is far longer than it is in reality and that somehow, lots of people doing it will somehow stop it. This is absolutely not true. This is little more than using members of the public as pawns with no concern about their welfare.
Make that stand if you want, hut it’ll fuck up your credit rating when the bailiffs come round and demand payment etc.
As someone who worked in the electricity industry for 32 years I have to say that cutting off supply is time consuming, fraught with legal pitfalls and leaves the energy company concerned without a customer ( however bad ). It is regarded as the last resort, expensive and counter productive and despite government threats nobody would find themselves plunged into darkness and cold on October 2nd.

They won’t make it
someone has to pay for it so it should probably be the indivduals using it.
They probably won’t cut people off.
What will probably happen is that non-payers get a black mark on their credit report, making it very difficult to get a mortgage or other credit in future.
Something needs to be done but I don’t know if this is it. There will be a lot of people reticent to join this group and that will allow the right wing press to make a mockery of it when it fails to garner much support. It is why an active protest on Westminster or against the energy companies at the headquarters would be a more feasible idea.
This will go the same way as the Poll tax protests. Ruining your credit rating for 6 years at least.
I appreciate the idea, but this needs to stop being shared. This is not going to end well for some people.
You either end up in debt, you’ll have to pay that back, you’ll have to pay admin fees i bet, you could end up having a meter installed instead. My brother has to have a meter because of a confusion with a bill and he’s a higher tax payer so if someone who has disposable income and able to take frequent holidays and stuff can get switched to a meter that easily. Then what the fuck am i going to do when i’m literally eating dust and connective tissue to be able to save money.
Good luck dealing with the consequences of a knackered credit file going forward then, meaning you’ll have to rely more on prepayment/bill on demand for energy which cost more on average than direct debit.
Seems incredibly stupid for metro and other media to give this type of group any sort of pr. It’s a dangerous thing for people to do that result in nothing helpful, especially for those that take part.
Their website is suspicious as fuck.
The only thing that could begin to help now, is renationalise the power grid.
Anyone thinking of getting involved, I would strongly recommend to look at the upsides and downsides:
Upside: zero… not enough people will join in for it to make an impact and most, if not all suppliers remaining will be able to absorb the cash flow for a month.
Downsides: credit score if reported, bigger bills in the future, unable to switch away to other suppliers due to debt (if wholesale prices fall by then).
If you’re on a ppm then you’ll also have no gas or elec at all…
There’s no background to who has set this up. The leaflets and stickers are heavily subsidised. There’s no information online at all regarding.
The reason why this won’t have an impact either is that, apart from providing extra support, the government/suppliers don’t have enough of an impact on the wholesale market in europe to drop prices. Most of the price increase recently has all been down to the war in Ukraine.
Yeah I can’t risk my credit rating dropping so I won’t be taking part, sorry!
they don’t need to call for people to stop paying bills, many, many people just won’t be able to pay.
Isn’t it just a debt? So they’ll sell your debt to a collection agency who will take everything you own
What do these people expect to come from bankrupting their energy company?
What’s the betting that the founders of this movement are still paying their energy bill….
The activist dashboard is nice…so anonymous that it reveals the one ‘activist’ in Gainsborough and the other nearby in Retford.
I’m sure you could check the API response that feeds into that map and get the exact addresses of the dissenters.
You might agree with the cause but don’t give these muppets your data. Nothing about this is legit.
‘Don’t Pay UK’ rhymes with ‘CCJ’.
A very dangerous game to try and play.
Doing this is a massive risk and is playing with something essential to living.
The problem with this is it would require a massive collective effort and everyone acting together, and I just don’t think we are capable of that.
They can’t destroy all of our credit scores!!
Although not the best action, something has to be done. Can’t just sit on your hands asking the fleecing bastards if you ca have the heating on.
If you have a smart meter they can just make it prepay remotely

I propose we all stop paying for anything really. Everything is too expensive and I don’t like it. Let’s call on 1 million households to steal their weekly shop from Tesco.
Now seriously, the UK consumes more energy and more calories per capita than many other countries. Reducing our consumption and improving our efficiency is not the end of the world. We should tighten the belts and wait it out. Instead of sitting in the dark because you didn’t pay your bill, we should find ways to help those who are most vulnerable.
Why are you just now sharing an article published over 3 weeks ago?
Don’t do this, terrible idea that will definitely hurt you way more than your energy supplier, or any of the people actually responsible for energy prices
Found this on some WhatsApp group. Is this theoretically possible?
> LPT Hack Your Meter To Get Free Electric.
Around 2000 people die in the UK because they can’t afford to heat their homes. Gas/electric prices are set to rise. Even more people will die.
But there is a simple way to get free electric. It’s simple, but MUST be done by someone who knows what they are doing. I mean, someone who REALLY knows what they are doing.
Once this is set up it is perfectly safe. It is detectable if someone scrutinises your fuse box, but generally it’s fool proof. As long as you don’t do something stupid like going from paying X amount for electricity to suddenly dropping the amount. This might put you on the radar and get you investigated.
Here it is. This will work in the UK. Will probably work in other countries, but I don’t know about that.
– You need a split fuse box with each side having it’s own RCD.
– Remove the main 100 amp fuse. There is usually a security tag on it, but a lot of times electricians cut off the tag. So it won’t look too suspicious if you cut the tag. It’s just a simple wire and can be cut with a pair of pliers or similar.
– Once the main fuse is out, it’s safe to work on.
– The cables (known as tails) start from the main fuse and go to your electric meter which then meters how much electric flows through it.
– From the meter it goes to your fuse box and allows you to power your home.
– What you want to do is cut the tails and place a type of junction box called a Henley Block between the main fuse and the meter.
– Then you can attach another set of tails from the Henley Block which will bypass the meter and go directly to your fuse box.
– Any electricity that flows through the bypass tails won’t register on your meter.
– So you have a fuse box with 2 RCDs. Separate one of the RCDs so it is no longer supplied by the original tails going into the fuse box.
– Take the new bypassed tails and connect them directly to the separated RCD.
– That’s it. Any electric flowing through the bypassed tails will be free. Half of the electric will flow through the original tails so you will still be paying for some of the electric. Makes it less suspicious.
– The main fuse/breaker on the fuse board will only turn off/isolate one side of the RCD. The other side that receives the bypassed electricity will be able to be isolated by the RCD.
– Hide the Henley Block and the new tails in the wall so no one suspects anything.
– Electricians charge around £500 to do this. I just hope that people who can’t afford to stay warm can be helped. <
