It’s less than the rise in energy alone, how would it ever meaningfully help people?
It was litrally nothing in comparison to the price increase.
What we need to do is start actually addressing the wealth gap between rich and poor. Because the wealthy havent been impacted at all.
The writing on the wall is that fossil fuel energy generation must come to an end. This is their attempt to try and slow change by taking away funding. Or to recoup the costs of mismanaged investments on services that will not have a lifetime as long as planned.
Outside of a massive mobilisation to create alternative infrastructure of renewables. Then these subsidies will do nothing. It’s like being mugged and saying hold up, you have more money in your bank account lets withdraw it. As long as people can pay bills then these soulless corporations will raise prices. The more you make it possible to raise prices by subsidising the consumer the more these bastard utilities will be able to rob us for. The hard truth is we need to go without heating and electricity to be able to negotiate a lower price.
Keynsianism only works as a mechanism to keep the machine turning in times of turmoil. You put money in and you tax the revenue. It’s a stall in economic growth but the idea is that by working it in such a way that the company will still be there once the dust settles – which is preferable to a complete failure. But you can’t have your cake and eat it. In exchange for keeping the cogs turning you’re supposed to tax the fuck out of them to stop inflation. That’s the mistake that was made recently. We put a lot of money in to the economy to keep it functioning but in a completely predictable moment of absolute greed the corporations refused to be taxed to take that fantasy money out of the economy again. So now we have corporations that should have failed with money that they don’t really deserve.
The same applies here. If the idea is to keep the utility industries cogs turning then fine. Subsidise the consumer to allow the money to move through and keep people employed. But tax them. Tax the shit out of them. We are living in fantasy economics that clearly cannot work. We as a nation need to return it to normality. We need to take money out of the economy. Starting with the revenue of billionaires.
Who’d have guessed Tories tinkling around the edges of a problem so they can claim the positive-PR headlines makes absolutely fuck all difference to real people on the ground.
>The wide-ranging report made a series of other recommendations, including:
>* consideration of the introduction of cheap, social tariffs for the most vulnerable
* allowing prepayment meter customers to pay for energy after they have used it, rather than before
* bringing in a “far-reaching” insulation programme in UK homes
Dare I say it, were Insulate Britain actually right?

No matter what the two Tory candidates are saying now, sooner or later they’re going to have to be giving out billions of pounds in support to avoid disaster. That or the Tory party is going to be crucified.
I find it disturbing that this post was submitted at the same time as the “Amazon increases Prime membership cost” post. Yet this one currently has 20 comment, and that one has 350.
Are people just burying their heads in the sand on this topic? Or have we reached saturation?
Discussing this, and the possible things I can do to reduce its impact on my family/community, is a massive focus of mine. But it seems the topic is not that popular with the broader readership.
Am I just needlessly pessimistic (I ask this seriously, as I am very prone to fixating on the negatives)? Or are people ignoring the coming winter crisis, as its too uncomfortable to think about?
You guys are getting payments?
With the October rise being predicted to be more than previously thought, and apparently rising again in January (citation needed, although I wouldn’t be surprised…I imagine it’ll rise again after that, too, and onwards into massive debt and poverty)…I’m pretty much well and truly fucked.
What if you’re not on benefits, thus ineligible for the payments but still live paycheck to paycheck?
Atleast they fucking got them. The people who get free stuff wanting more as usual while those who work and pay their way shared as ever.
It’s not a cost of living payment , it’s a stimulus payment to stimulate the economy or give the impression the economy is growing under the short term
Government need to tell the energy companies to stop taking the piss.
