What America’s Great Unwinding Would Mean for the World. The conundrum facing America’s allies is how to cope with a great imperial power in decline that is still a great imperial power.

  1. > Pushed by Germany and France, the EU has sought out trade and energy deals with rival global powers, including Russia and China. The idea was that as the U.S. disengaged from Europe, the EU would step up.

    That worked out so well.

  2. I’d call it more of a great coalescing. The US laid a good foundation. The west will continue progress in good ways. But don’t count out the US.

  3. The Europeans really need to step up.
The US with 330 million cannot defend _The West_ alone. Especially with an authoritarian state in Asia with 1.4 billion people getting really strong.

The EU with Britain had around 520 million people. The EU arguably could have been the superpower above the US.

  4. The same stuff was written in the 1970s after Vietnam with oil prices surging, the US retreating from fighting communism directly, rising inflation, domestic problems, etc…

Don’t bury us until we’re actually dead.

  5. the us cannot be destroyed from the outside. not only do they have the most powerful military, but the location of the country and it’s natural resources means that, with a bit of sacrifice, which americans would embrace with patriotic fervour in case of an invasion, they could weather any storm thrown at them.

only internal strife, on which no country could directly intervene, can bring the imperium down. unless it loses the world reserve currency status. but that is another talk, for another day.

natures abhors a vacuum. and power vacuums, when sudden and chaotic, always leads to violence.

facing this certainty is the rest of the world. not only the eu, but china also has a symbiotic nature with the usa. chimerica, niall ferguson calls it. one could argue that some of the troubles we have now exist because of that american power. the “fuck the eu” during the maidan square protests in ukraine, and nancy visit to taiwan, are sings that sometimes america likes to stir shit up, just to maintain relevancy. maybe because the americans know that they are only relevant because of their currency and army. and although currency status can change fast, an army during peace is less useful.

the future is asian, not just chinese but indian too. they will be the powerful nations of the future. the us and the eu can only compete for third place. and things are looking pretty good for the us at this point in time.

  6. China will have a higher GDP than america by 2030 with no signs of slowing down.

Everything has long been projecting china being the leading economy going into the future. Once they have all 1.4 billion people consuming….driving…..having cell phones/tvs…..we can’t compete with that many consumers.

The only reason the USA was the worlds reserve currency was because we had the biggest economy.
