Barnes Bridge: Unused Thames structure could become garden walkway

  1. This looked weird to me because trains & pedestrians (including me) still use Barnes Bridge all the time. So how could it be “unused”? Apparently there are two bridges on a single set of piers: the still in-use parts are a newer and wider span built in the 1890s, made on extensions of the original piers. The original span from the 1840s was left in place, but not used after the new spans were built, and might now be put into use as a second pedestrian bridge on the upstream side.

Seems like a nice project – they are already building a riverside walkway under the bridge so that the path is not interrupted, and an extra crossing will make this a really good route for walking/running/biking along the river.
