For anyone wondering about Poland. Poland basically had almost no universal administration, taxes, justice etc. It was kind of patchwork country of kings Lands and other nobles Lands.
I’m very curious how the Dutch tax rate is so high in comparison to other european neighbours.
Is the Ottoman curve for Muslims or non-Muslims?
There has been some research in the financial aspects of the more or less continuous wars between Louis XIV’s France and the Dutch Republic between 1672 and 1712. The funny thing about it is that the Republic collected far more taxes per capita (as shown above) and built up a far higher estimated debt-to-GDP ratio, but still it is Louis XIV who is constantly associated with oppressive taxes.
A crushing debt-to-GDP ratio (for that age) appears to be one of the major causes of the decline of the Republic as a military power in the 18th century. Caused exclusively by wars with neighbours, because that was really the only major concern over which the administration of the confederacy had jurisdiction.
