You might be paying for up to 500mbps.. No more, but probably considerably less
I had this on virgin years ago. Contact them and ask them to have an engineer investigate. If it’s a problem outside your house it isn’t your responsibility. In my case it was congestion on the local node.
It took them 17 months to upgrade the node but I was given credit for 12 months of that. I received a years free internet basically.
Check how many devices are listed by logging into your modem via a web browser. Some setups remember every device that ever logged on to your wi-fi and allocates the bandwidth per device. So if yours has 20 devices listed, it may only allow 500/20 = 25 per device as a theoretical max. Delete them all and reconnect /re-enter passwords on the devices you actually use regularly.
Having said all that, the up/down ratio shown here is a further indication of your providers being sneaky wankers.
Are you testing via cable? If not, it looks like it could be a WiFi issue. Move closer to the router and test again.
That is an issue with the wifi it looks like, no way there should be that much difference between down and up speeds…
Did you try that speed via wifi and how close were you to the router?
Are ye wired in?
I pay for 250 and tested at 252, previous place was similar around 250. That said I’ve the wifi on two channels from the modem, 2.4 & 5, the higher speeds will be on the 5 but only works closer to the router, on the 2.4 it’s probably 60-70 instead which is still more than manageable
“Up to”
Check the WiFi channel your router is on, it might be congested dude.
I use an android app called fing. Picked an unsaturated channel for the router.
That said I’d a week of shite with virgin, I called em, they reset the router, it didn’t help, was about to call them back, but the was a virgin van in the estate, after they left, I reset it myself, bingo.
But deffo make the call, and don’t believe the 30 minute wait time, it answered within 3 minutes, but your mileage may vary.
I was never that bad but some of my experience here. Before upgrading to 500mb we were on like 250mb and getting the rates you showed. It was all down to brutal WiFi from their router. So I splashed about €200 on a mesh WIFi system. This was transformative but still WIFi never matches Etherley speeds. So I then signed duo for 500MB and they sent out a new router and new fibre cable from the wall into router. I regularly get 350mb on WIFi with this. But as an aside a friend just went with Eir and is singing their praises. I’d be scared about customer support so if you are out of contract you can try moving to Eir fibre?
An engineer will sort you out.
I’ve had virgin for 10 years over 3 different locations and can count the amount of issues I’ve had on 1 hand. It’s a great service.
Couple of things , firstly try plug directly into the router if you can to do a speed test , this will tell you what speed your getting into the house could very well be a bad fibre cable or damaged outside the house etc. so this could help try identify the issue.
Next if you get the full speed or near it been wired in is to change the router the white WiFi router they give you is absolutely shite , think it’s the hub 3 or something like that !
Use the router in modem mode get yourself a mesh system something like deco mesh WiFi or something along that lines , you’ll get a lot better speeds with a mesh system then that shite router they give you I get 400 mbps + all over the house from my mesh system compared to the 80 or so from the router they provide.
I like to complain as much as the next r/Ireland user, but I’ve found virgin to be very good. Contact them and see what the story is.
