Vodafone (the bulk surveillance company) is in the shit. No wonder it wants to jump onto Three.
> But industry executives have argued that having four networks has meant operators are continually having to push down prices due to fierce competition, depriving them of the funds needed to invest in the UK’s digital infrastructure such as 5G and fibre broadband.
Translation – we can’t hike prices up as much as we’d like to improve profits and investor returns
Can’t imagine the Competition and Markets Authority allowing any consolation although it will be interesting if they do considering that the EU previously blocked the O2/Three merger. Will monopolies be a Brexit dividend?
This results in ‘poor returns and under-investment’ compared to what is needed for the country to be globally competitive
Pretty conclusively arguing for price rises. I struggle to see any evidence that the UK is under invested as we have a very competitive offering globally arguably the only network under invested is Three but that’s a business decision and how they are consistently able to undercut the big networks.
I think many have said it over the years but the natural state companies want to move towards is a monopoly.
That’s why we have regulators to prevent this.

They are correct. I thought they weren’t but they are. Having seen their point of view i have decided they are in deed, correct.
Competiton hurts profits. We *need* more consolodation in the telecomunications market. As such we should have just 1 telecommunications company in britain. A truly british telecommunications company. I am not sure what to call this company however. UK telecomms? British national telecomms? Or BT for short. yes! thats it. British telecom. We can create a new single company called British Telecom which would control all the telecommunications infrastucture if the UK. With no troublesome compeitors. Genius! k cant believe no thought of it before! 😉

Maybe it’s time for these utility companies to come under more strict government control.
Calling the backbone of modern society an industry is understating there importance, and the idea of it turning into a for profit monopoly is borderline terrifying.
telecom has never been a true free market, its always been a question of how much profit the govt let them make and how much they chose to invest. i believe it has worked reasonably well in allowing the infrastructure to be created and the telcos do have an incentive to invest and be more efficient to increase their market share.
this is different to things like water and (maybe) trains, where there is little new infrastructure and most of the incentive seems to be to cut costs and reduce service to a tolerable minimum.
consolidation would be a bad idea.
So instead of having 4 terrible providers, we can have 2. Joy. Out of all of them Vodafone is the worst of the worst. They are just utter, utter uncaring crap. They make Virgin Media look like saints. I was with them years ago till they treated me like dirt and since then, they can go to hell. The reason? I rang them up saying I had lost my job and wanted to reduce my monthly payment. What did I get? The woman telling me “You signed a contract” and said that at least 4 times and that’s as far as it went. As far as Vodafone is concerned, they can go get stuffed.
