With so many people now using house ownership as a renting investment we desperately need sweeping regulations to cut out these cowboys and concrete the market otherwise if/when a crash happens it’ll just be hundreds of thousands of people suffering
Landlord will prob increase the rent to cover the fine
A fine?! Ban him from taking part in the rental sector ever again anywhere in the UK.
We need way higher standards when it comes to landlords and that begins by having your right to be one stripped if you’re doing slum-lord shit like this.
> £31,250, must pay costs of £8,657 and a victim surcharge of £190.
So how much of the fines/payouts are the tenants going to receive?
Does “victim surcharge” mean they’re only to receive £190? Or is that a dumb question because the answer is actually “LOL Nuddin'”?
I suspect this is the tip of the iceberg and other landlords are doing worse than this. A register is sorely needed, as well as an independent assessor.
Let me guess a HMO?
Landlords should be licensed to stop quacks and cowboys and tossers like this.

Really–landlords should’nt exist. But that’s never gonna happen since the politicians rake it in from them.
Good. If the landlord wanted to rent it out as a bedsit, they should have turned it into a bedsit. I live in one and mine has a counter and sink in. It’s not a large counter but big enough to do what i need to. Along with a cupboard. This landlord sounds like they wanted to squeeze everything out of the building and hoped that the fear of eviction kept the tenants quiet.

We need better rules and for the entire market to be sorted out. There is no way I will own a flat because A. By the time i’ve made enough on a NMW zero hour contract, I’ll be in my late 70s. B. It’ll cost too much to run the damn place.
should be banned from participating in the sector.
What is needed is a return to local Council House building, take the profit motive out of housing supply and replace it with Socially driven ‘homes’ building…Like we had pre Thatcher…
Dennis that you?
to everyone commenting about licences and regulations, there already are regulations, many regulations which are due to change in 2025 but no one to check them. they only get enforced when theres a serious complaint.
My first Bedsit 32 years ago had a sink bed mirror and baby belling hob and oven had to share bathroom and separate loo with 6 other people. My next place was a Maisonette above a hairdresser windows which froze and just one electric heater could smell perming lotion it was freezing in winter with a newborn.Had hoped things had improved but obviously not was lucky because of the flat above hairdressers made me and my daughters chest get bad ended up with a council property. These landlords make a fortune cutting corners and are hardly punished because people always need inexpensive rental property.
The name says it all. These folk do the same thing in Birmingham.Plenty slum landlords.
The story is unfortunately short on detail. Was the tenant’s rent paid by UC or other government benefits? If not, on what basis can the government decide that the tenancy is illegal? The headline suggests the tenant was “forced” to cook in their bedroom, but there’s no evidence of this.
Ive said this in multiple replies elsewhere.
**The current set up of the UK Property Market is the cancer that is destroying Britain**.
**The fact that anyone, literally anyone can become a Lanlord, Estate Agent or letting agent and swim in the flow of thousands of pounds of cash completely unlicensed is insane**.
Also sitting ontop of mountains of personal data the sensitivity of which would only be used in other very highly regulated sectors like Tax, Banking and Legal Matters.
**Except Letting Agents, Estate Agents and Landlords are not Licensed**.
Which is why UK Property is being used in the laundering of the £90 Billion per year of Dirty Money from all over the world. “The London Laundromat”. Because there is no effective regulation. They criminals can get away with it.
**You could be a convicted fraudster and setup as a letting agent (no need to even have an actual shop), then allow prospective tenants to apply and get to the vetting stage where they hand over their personal and financial details. Except you reject all of them for “failing the vetting” but keep their personal data. Who is going to stop you? How would they even track you? You’re not licensed**.
British Letting Agents are literally the middlemen in packing rented suburban houses with modern slavery trafficked women to be abused and prostituted. How are we not shutting these people down.
These “hear no evil, see no evil” roles in the property market including rogue UK Landlords are a protective mask for career criminals and organised crime to make millions off of untaxed misery.

Oh christ is that a tinfoil backsplash.
