Because they’re genuinely too stupid/detached from reality(/actively malicious towards the UK?) to connect actions to consequences. They *said* everything would be fine, they genuinely believed it, so obviously reality should have bent to fit that because that’s just how it works right? We all had a debate and their side “won” so QED.
This country, its press and political system in particular, have allowed magical wishful thinking to vastly outstrip anything silly like material comparative analysis of data and projected trends.
The Murdoch press isn’t panicked about a recession, it creates a panic about the recession in order to sell media. It backed Brexit because, as Murdoch said himself “When I go into Downing Street they do what I say; when I go to Brussels they take no notice” ( has since denounced this as Fake news”)
It’s not like Murdoch himself was ever going to be personally harmed by it, so it is the line he fed his readers for his own benefit. Besides, feeding off his readers’ emotions made his papers more popular and made him more money, he was able to benefit hugely off them.
He might finally have backed the wrong PM in Johnson though. With the outlook for the UK looking bleak and bleaker than other countries in the G7, Murdoch might finally have gone too far and is trying to reign people back in a bit. If people are cutting back on non-essentials, how long until his papers are affected? How long until a different government comes in to tackle right wing extremism? He is not worried about the UK, he is worried about how the situation here will affect him personally.
>If the Murdoch press is so panicked about recession, why did it back austerity and Brexit?
Sells newspapers and advertising, they can give fake empathy to their consumers whilst pretending they had no involvement in driving the policies responsible for causing the problem.
Taking actions and not taking responsibility for the consequences of those actions must be a wonderful thing.
more to the point, why try to stimulate a recession to occur? By talking things down, they are helping to make a recession, but then so is the Guardian
Drama == Profit
They’re not panicked, they’re in the business of selling fear.
Because they need to hoodwink the public into believing it’s Labour’s fault.
Murdoch is in the business of selling papers and stirring up certain sentiments. The Murdoch press doesn’t have to be coherent to achieve this
Good question.
But I guess the eldest Murdoch son is a moron.
The Murdoch father is a demented horny old man who only thinks with….you got it.
Young Murdoch who has somewhat common sense and nowadays is only a millionaire but through his own work and money…has been expelled from the family.
So I guess they didnt think that one through.
They are less concerned with recession than they are about getting clicks/selling papers/getting viewers, and far more concerned about keeping the status quo. That means going to lengths to worry people, but not quite enough to get people to do anything about it (or rather, make people fearful of valid alternatives).
Because it suited them at the time.
They’re now realising that the pendulum has swung so far they are in real danger of alienating their own readers, so they’re working as hard as they can to push things in the other direction.
If Keir Starmer has the brains he was born with, he’ll arrange a meeting with the editor of the Sun and before you know it, they’ll switch allegiances.
If Hitler is so keen to militarily dominate the European continent, why is he invading Russia?
Because, he was an idiot with a shit plan.
In the case of austerity, because another decade of borrowing to spend would have made inflation *even worse*.
As others pointed out. They’re a machine for selling. Most likely they know what will sell at any time using rather clever algorithms that are buying and selling data, read comments on the internet, algorithms that “have a feel for their audience” and which can predict well enough what kind of mood is currently out there, and what will grab their/our attention.
Murdoch’s press is only panicked so you can get in touch with your local MP so you can find out why Labour isn’t doing anything about it.
My view on conservatives is that they do not perceive future consequences very well.
Partially this will be mentally inherent and partially upbringing. They get genuinely upset at any effort to deal with and plan for future events.
When in power they do very little and think themselves very clever. The last decade has been 100% this mentality.
They don’t give a shit about a recession. They will still pump out their toxic waste no matter the state of the economy
Because their readership are more likely to have shares in these industries, and pensions that benefit from them. When enough people are so hard up they can no longer afford this stuff the industry crumbles. Companies go bust and in some cases that means people lose a lot of money from investments
If the left leaning press is so panicked about recession, why did it back lockdowns and money printing?
Because they are evil people that contributed nothing of value to the world.
I’m playing both sides, so that I always come out on top.
They’re not panicked, they’re doing their job which is to manipulate the British public.
Because it sold papers.
Now panicking about the recession will sell papers.
In the run up to the Brexit referendum it was galling to watch Sky News, every day non stop coverage of migrants crossing the English channel etc etc. As soon as the vote was decided. No more coverage of the immigrants, back to normal news ! Unbelievable how blatant it actually was and most people never connected the dots. I hope Murdock dies screaming!
They’re not panicked, they want to drive their readers into a panic.
These are entirely different things.
Because it sells.
Next.
whos paying them ?
I only replied to this but I just remembered, im pretty sure the guardian pushed for Brexit too but it hammering on about recessions.
These fucks have no moral fiber in their bodies.
The readers of Murdoch newspapers will cheer on anything not impacting them but like any rabid crowd they will turn on that source when they start to get impacted. Brexit and austerity don’t register because it didn’t impact them but as the screw turns everybody is being impacted. The rabid crowd will turn on the Murdoch press when tipping point is reached. That is a recession.
Let’s not get it twisted. The media backs whatever it needs to in order to retain readership and ensure the owners of such media are profiting.
Whether they’ll make a buck on selling off our assets, or buying them up mega cheap, say a UK that’s lost all standing in the world and is bankrupt, that’s a yard sale at that rate!
Because they scrapped the tea leaves reading column years ago
Could have foreseen it otherwise
