Sounds like a good segue into legalising cannabis to offset the costs.
I’m getting quotes for double glazing tomorrow, it will be cheaper to install than running the heating.
I remember being cold when I was a kid in the 60s and 70s. Ice on the inside of the windows in winter, sitting between the clothes horse and open fire, all that stuff. I swore then that I would never be cold when I was a grown up. I’m fucking devastated that we are going back to that world, mainly due to corporate and individual greed and power-hungry arseholes.
I’ve already stopped paying my unsecured debt, a couple of credit cards, PayPal credit and a couple of catalogues/store cards.
Fuck em, and fuck my “credit rating”. They can try to phone me and refer it to DCAs all they want, I’m not playing anymore.
You might actually get people deciding electricity isn’t worth the money at that price! Mobile devices could be charged with cheap solar chargers from Amazon and refrigeration will just be a thing of the past. We’ll all just buy whatever we can cook on bonfires in the park, or for the truly well off, a garden or balcony.
Nationalise the energy companies. Every last one.
Not tragic when there is gonna be a shortage. Tragic is everyone voting this Tory party, every singing and dancing in the street putting there bunting out a few weeks ago. Wake the F up, is anyone out there awake or are you all just sleep walking and shitting in your chair?
I’m just fucking terrified… I’ve finally started a job where i will be earning a decent wage except I won’t… because it was a decent wage 5 years ago. Now it’s just keeping your head above water wage…
I’m genuinely terrified of the future… I cannot ever see it getting better. We just roll over every damn time…
Seems the Tories want hypothermia to take over where Covid19 left off..
I like him but it was really dumb of him to tell people to stay on a variable tariff when the last 50% increase happened, it was predicted to rise again and if you didn’t fix slightly above the 50% back then it’s now costing you even more by staying on the variable
Just a reminder that in Scotland (and probably elsewhere in the U.K. as well) Home Energy Scotland do interest free loans upto £5k for solar PV panels and even offer cash back and interest free loans on other things (heat pumps etc).
Im getting solar panels installed on sept 1st, cost £4990 and using an interest free loan from HES to pay back £85 a month over 5 years. Calculations say that the panels will more than safe that £85 from the day of commissioning. If you can swing it, and your credit rating isn’t terrible, this is the way to go
Being warm in the winter is vastly overated lol. Captain Scott explored the Antarctic..oh no he died.
What temperature are you setting on your thermostat?
I find that 18 degrees is perfectly fine for spring and autumn. Maybe 20 for winter. A couple of degrees higher if it’s really cold.
Fixed my mortgage yesterday for 5 years. That was the max term my provider would allow. It’s slightly more expensive than what I’m currently paying, but that’s going to have to do.
I also got a brand new boiler installed, upgrade from a 30 year old one that was here when we bought. Alongside that, smart thermostatic controls on all the radiators which means I can heat literally just the room I’m using, and it’ll turn off when it reaches a certain room temp, plus has in-built sensors to stop pipes from freezing.
Using these new smart TRVs normally gives a saying of between 20-40%, and the new boiler is 30% on average more efficient than the old Baxi I just got rid of.
next I spent 25 quid on amazon on four smart plugs which are now timed to turn off at certain times, and can be activated via an app…that’s reduced my electricity output from about 13kw/ph a day to roughly between 7-10kw/ph per day…we also turn off anything else overnight, basically it’s just the fridge and phone chargers running.
I got lucky, this year I received a bonus at work which was enough to cover most of this work. If that hadn’t happened, I’d have dipped into the emergency fund. And I’m fully aware, this is turning into a real fucking emergency. I just hope the savings I made from energy reduction offset at least most of the damage these bills will cause us. On the plus side this new system will end up paying for itself much quicker, but that’s not exactly a good thing really.
And I also really fucking hope I don’t get made redundant any time soon, especially working in a job that’s susceptible to market downturn from dropping subscribers.
