I can’t wrap my head around the government taking more than 12 (!!!) Years to implement a reminder-system.

Shitty Life Pro Tip: report your id/drivers license as stolen.
Since both are valid 10 years you will get a reminder for your ID en then you can get a new license as well.
I had my stuff actually stolen so this is the only “positive” about it, that both expire on the same day.
ELI5 why do we need plastic versions anyway?
For id cards i get it. But for this, i dont see the point. My paper version has universal little drawings on them that a 5 year old can identify. In the 15 years that i have had it, ive had to show it twice.

What happens if it expires?
an automatic reminder (by email to save paper?) might be nice for some people. Can’t be too hard to do. Or even without personalized touch: put a reminder to check it every now and then in the commune’s newsletter…
Although i do regularly check it. If I go on holiday, even for the weekend I check if my documents are still ok. Don’t wanna be caught without a valid drivers license in France or Italy.

I needed to replace my license two years ago, I only noticed it last year.
I was really annoyed they didn’t send a reminder. I don’t use my car very often, and during COVID I think I only used it once every other week or so.
Then I requested my new one, I had to wait a week for it to be ready.
It’s interesting, when there is a tax bill or covid vaccine I get notified in all kind of digital boxes the government has. Why would they not do the same for these type of things? They could it even make it simple by doing it quarter by quarter as its not a timely urgent thing anyway.
Anyone who’s tech savy can explain to me why cards (like ID, bank, etc) expire at all? Does it have something to do with the code to read the card or just a security measure in case someone breaks the system?
If there is no reason attatched to it, exept to get money then it’s the biggest BS invention ever and the minister who put it in place should be chastised with a 10kg version of such a card.

Dit is een administratief probleem. Je hebt een geldige licentie om te rijden. Enkel het document is vervallen.
Kunnen ze dat rijbewijs niet gewoon digitaliseren voor op de smartphone? In Amerika kan dit al in een paar staten.
En is het zo moeilijk om het rijbewijs te integreren in de chip van je ID kaart zodat je tenminste in België een kaart minder in je portefeuille moet hebben?
To help me with this, I had my license renewed on the same date as my ID the last time I did it. This way when I get the reminder that I need to renew my ID, I know to also renew my license.
They are both valid for 10 years.

Zijn de cijfers qua boete effectief geverifieerd of heeft de auteur gewoon even “rijden zonder rijbewijs Belgie” gegoogled en die cijfers eropgeplakt?
Plus die gigantische range van mogelijk bedrag… Waar hangt dat van af? Recidive? het humeur van de flik/rechter?
Anyways punt dat ik wou maken is dat rijden zonder rijbewijs op zak slechts een boete van 100 euro of iets is normaalgezien, dus zou meer sense maken dat rijden met een verlopen rijbewijs dan hetzelfde is als dat.
