The rise of Éric Zemmour shows how far France has shifted to the right

  1. In the article:

    > *”He has claimed to be on the side of General Bugeaud, who massacred Muslims during the colonisation of Algeria”*

This is a bit misleading and missing context. Not a good point for the Guardian.

What Zemmour said was that in his opinion, when a foreigner wants to acquire French nationality, that person must assimilate into French society. In particular, that person ought to make France’s history his; even if his country of origin has bad blood with France.

Zemmour took the exemple of general Bugeaud, who led a particularly bloody conquest of Algeria. He said that he himself, who is of Algerian descent but consider himself fully assimilated into the French society, therefore feels closer to Bugeaud’s side than to the Algerian’s side, because he looks at the history of France from the point of view of France. Without condoning Bugeaud’s massacres.

  2. Politics is a pendulum. The left should be happy they had their way for so long, but shouldn’t be surprised that things change

  3. When you read news about France on English media is like reading news about Barcelona fc on Real Madrid news media.

    Its gonna be guaranteed bullshit.
