Amazing actor, performer, athlete, human and singer and… And so much more. He was truly one of the best – literally.
Yle TV 1 is making a special broadcast sometime tonight. They are also making some sort of ”muisto-ohjelma” (to Yle Areena i hope). I hope they can just put EVERYTHING out there for like a year (-infinity).
Most devastating celebrity death of 2022 for me, hands down. I was straight up bawling at work when I heard. Him and his work meant so much to me – in my childhood through his Uuno Turhapuro films and in my adulthood through his music. His renditions of Eino Leino poems got me through my best friend’s death in 2012 and my grandfather’s death in 2019. One of the most special experiences of my life is seeing him sing them in a tiny, intimate club to nothing but an acoustic guitar and his harmonica. Truly a one of a kind talent, a national treasure and icon, and Finland is less bright without him. In the words of the great Eino Leino, which Loiri rendered so beautifully:
“En ma enää aja virvatulta,
onpa kädessäni onnen kulta;
pienentyy mun ympär’ elon piiri;
aika seisoo, nukkuu tuuliviiri;
edessäni hämäräinen tie
tuntemattomahan tupaan vie.”
I had the privilige of sharing a table with him during the time of him making ”Ivalo” album. He had a cognac, laughed at our jokes and told many nice things about our home town. He really enjoyed it there.
A great man. RIP.
