If self-defence training helps people feel safer and can help them get out of dangerous situation then it’s a good idea. It all just feels like a bandaid to a much bigger problem of policing harassment and sexual assault on public transport and in public places. Ideally we just need a much bigger and more coordinated police presense with outreach there to protect vulnerable people. But between cuts and the abysmal state of the Met, we’re quite far off any of that
Everyone should have at least a little experience in a full contact combat sport.
The fucked up reality is this. If I’m on the tube and a random man decides he’s going to try to seriously hurt me, or even kill me, there is a limit to what I can do no matter what training I get. That’s just the disparity of upper body strength. And I say this as somebody who goes to the gym regularly and am definitely fit for a woman.
But, to be honest, I have never actually felt unsafe on the tube. Positive benefit of it being so crowded, there are always people around. It’s walking home FROM the tube that I feel unsafe!
Best thing you can learn from a self defence class is situational awareness. Worth more than any move you will learn no matter how many times you practice it.
Definitely worth taking a class but always remember a black belt covers 2 inches of yer arse it’s up to you to cover the rest.
Oh and 99 out of 100 times it’s better to look like a fanny and run than get the shit kicked outta you or worse.
Anyone who truly understands the strength disparity between men and women knows this is a bad idea. A few sessions of basic drills will not bridge that gap, and in fact it may have an adverse impact if the women become overconfident and engage in conflicts that would have otherwise been avoided
Can we get pepperspray? It’s illegal in the uk.
Maybe we should just like put some of our money together and use that to pay people whose job it would be to protect innocent people from bad people.
