Marking Hiroshima: ‘Independent Scotland would sign nuclear weapon ban’

  1. >Now, on the anniversary of the horrific attack, the Scottish Greens have said that an independent Scotland would “finally remove nuclear weapons”, adding that the country should “immediately sign and ratify” the Treaty on the Prohibition Of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW).

This is why the Greens are a joke besides their climate policy. How could any sane person look at the state of the world and think now would be the perfect time to get rid of nukes?

Also Hiroshima and Nagasaki were 100% justified. It saved more lives in the long run and why on Earth would the Allies accept a conditional surrender? If they did that with Germany, Nazi Germany would still exist today and Japan would be full of Bushido zealots.

  2. At a time when Green politicians in Germany are tackling the energy squeeze and cost of living crisis, the Scottish Greens are still mired in 1980s opposition and protest chat.

Due to the current set up the ScotsGreens have an unprecedented advantage to get ministerial position and put polices into action. Unfortunately they would rather prefer to bang on about the fringe stuff instead.

  3. Oh well I’m sure the big superpowers of the world will give up their nukes immediately if they know that Scotland has banned them.

  4. Banning/de-arming countries from nuclear weapons is a terrible idea to me, the cat is already out of the bag.. giving them up now is a sure fire way to get your ass invaded in the future, just remember.. Russia would never be in Ukraine right now if they didn’t give up their nukes.

  5. Is that like ‘Nuclear Free London’ that had a reactor at the Naval Collage in Greenwich until 1996? Even the ECJ agreed that military needs superceded other principles.

  6. > Now, on the anniversary of the horrific attack, the Scottish Greens have said that an independent Scotland would “finally remove nuclear weapons”, adding that the country should “immediately sign and ratify” the Treaty on the Prohibition Of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW).

Have they honestly got nothing better or more useful to do with their time than weaken our defensive position?

  7. What’s the apparent upside to this? When two authoritarian nuclear powers are flexing their muscles, nuclear weapons are necessary and here to stay.

Getting rid of nuclear weapons from Scotland would just result in a lot of lost jobs with no upside.

  8. If Scotland get independence they will lose up 50000 jobs straight away when all the armed forces bases shut n local businesses lose the money. Plans already in place for our nuke subs n the closures from the last once in a lifetime vote. The nuclear deterrent has done its job for last 60 years n thank goodness we have them with clowns like China russia North Korea etc etc

  9. I mean (correct me if I’m wrong) an independent Scotland wouldn’t even be allowed to develop nuclear weapons as a non-member of the UN Security Council.

Unless they become a North Korea / Pakistan / Israel / South Africa / Iran style rogue state on the issue. I missed India on purpose since most people would agree they should also hold a seat on the UN Security Council (thereby having the right to hold nukes) as a nation representing just under 20% of the world population…

  10. They are only banning what they don’t have, would mean more if they could have or afford a Nuke.

I’m banning the sale of Ferraris, because I cant afford one.

  11. I have no idea why ScotNats always come out with this one, it just guarantees pointless friction with England. It’s also deeply dishonest as they know, full well, that Scotland will continue to be protected by NATO’s nuclear umbrella. It’s classic sixth form politics, and it shows just how ridiculous a section of the ScotNat mindset continues to be.

  12. Hot take, but Russia having a nuclear Arsenal is currently preventing a total war with the west. If things were conventional, NATO would be able to completely wipe out Russia’s military rn and force a situation where Russia would never again be able to military attack anyone.

  13. Perhaps the when they are looking at the warheads and the future to-be state of the nuclear deterrent they could decommission ageing plutonium and uranium stock. Helping to create lower cost power for the electricity grid.

Saving us some money on our bills. Whist devising a more tactically astute stock pile with lower yield warheads and greater deployment flexibility.

  14. Expect Putins’ fingers to be in any upcoming referendum then.

They love our independence debate over there, whenever it’s on the table there is a huge spike in interest in our politics.

They know the value of this precious union more than we do. They know the international shockwaves it will cause.

  15. I’m just gonna say it, Scotland would ban nukes but then still rely on the protection of other countries an their nukes.

  16. Hope they’re prepared for a shit-ton of job losses related to the military upping sticks, then.

With Vulcan NRTE in the process of decommissioning, Rosyth privatised and only used for dismantling old boats (sub refits were moved to Devonport almost 20 years ago) and integration runs of some newer ships, and even MoD Caledonia (also at Rosyth) set to close there within 5 years; that only leaves major close-down procedures to be done at Faslane.

Re: Trident specifically, it and related staffing would most likely relocate to shared space in the US (possibly some might base in Australia under AUKUS now, too).

  17. Scottish independence right now would be a complete joke. On top of recovering from brexit and covid, inflation, energy prices etc, the government would have to deal with Scottish independence which would be incredibly complicated.

Alongside that, you’ve got the inevitable change of government in 2024/2025 which will only add to the complexity. Then you have the military stuff, the UK would still own all of that and Scotland would be left without protection.

Then you’ve got the Scottish economy, it could survive, but Sturgeon’s vision is to make its a thriving place like the Netherlands or Denmark but its economy would have to become better for that. So independence now could lead to an uncertain chance of a better nation years and years in the future.

  18. So glad that the nationalists have taken a clear stance on important issues like… weapons they’ll never have anyway.

Maybe soon they’ll outline some of the major obstacles facing independence that they’ve neglected forever because the answer makes them look kind of bad.

  19. Scotland bout to make brexit look like a minor roadbump compared to all the economic and political turmoil this is gonna stir up

  20. Nice idea but I wouldn’t trust countries to not continue to develop them in secret anyway (even if by some miracle every country agreed). The genie is out of the bottle unfortunately.
