Rental prices hit a new all-time high as supply plummets to its lowest ever level

  1. Poor Irish people need to leave Ireland. Maybe go to Ukraine, I’d say property is affordable.

    Edit:
    It’s sarcasm people.

I’m actually so outraged that I had to be sarcastic, what other way to be than to say something so outrageous. If I was dictator I’d solve the housing crisis and make sure everyone is homed in a month.

  2. Step 1: *Let’s all vilify landlords and threaten them with heavy restrictions*

Step 2: Allow time to pass whilst continuing Step 1 on a regular basis

Step 3: “Why are there no properties for rent?”

  3. Step 1 – Make sure the people who build homes can’t get easy finance. Obvious impact here.

Step 2 – Legislate that all new build homes are A-rated for energy, which costs more to build and mortgage than you can feasibly recoup in saved energy bills over the course of your lifetime. New build owners are financing future generations energy savings.

Step 3 – Don’t whatever you do, allow the “gorgeous” Dublin skyline be encroached, resulting in the least dense capital city in Europe.

Welcome to the world you wanted lads.

  4. I keep seeing and hearing people point to supply, but wouldn’t it be more accurate to say supply low due to AirBNB, second homes and corporate landlording?

  5. There is no way this ends well. The house prices and rents are unsustainable, the controls put in place in some areas at the time of the last crash are now working against the market. What is so enraging is that this was evident for years to anyone with half a brain. I read about reports and planned changes to how things are approved and even about height restrictions. And I think wasn’t this a problem 8 years ago, why wasn’t it done then. Also every scheme the government announced was insufficient. Housing was the number one issue in the last election and had been a hot topic for years before. So why the fuck is it still a huge problem?

The population increased, every report said it would, we needed more homes, offices, hotels and public amenities. We needed private and social housing. The government, the councils, all the parties, the planners, even the fucking architects and the regulators fucked up so badly, that they couldn’t acknowledge the problems until it is too late. How is it the market still going in the wrong direction?

I know how but Fuck me it still shocks me it is happening.

  6. As a working 20-something-year-old still living at home thanks to this – how does this end? Surely prices can’t keep rising forever?

  7. Is there any hope, a chance of any of this shit ending anytime soon? I don’t see any drastic measures being put in place and all the building you see now is just 4 bed semi D’s out in the commuter towns.

  8. I’ve been saying this forever, the Home buyers market is in a crisis but at least kept somewhat in check by the central bank lending rules. The rental market though its a trainwreck and renters are literally drowning.

  9. Remember people… the only way to solve this rental crisis is to oppose build to rent at all costs! There is no way we should let those f@@kers supply additional units!

  10. What annoys me most is both FF and FG went into government knowing their policies were ineffective, but it was done to keep the shinners out.

They both deserve to be obliterated next election.

  11. This is fantastic news,l have no words for how well things are going, every single day my house goes up by at least a hundred euro, money lm making as l sit on my hole. My house is worth over €850,000 now. It’s incredible! ( I only paid €340,000 in 2013!) My Mortgage is paid and l love to rub it in the noses of the twenty something pricks in Work. I never miss a chance to gloat, standing over them and telling them what l paid and how im on the Pig’s back and how they missed the boat and are just renting scum. I hope the Housing situation becomes Chronic ( My House goes up in value yet again!) We need to get more Ukrainians into Dublin also to keep House prices sky high. LEO VARADKAR and FG has actually made me a Millionaire on paper and l love that man,he needs a Statue on Grafton Street. I hope FG policies are the order of the day for decades. There are two classes in Dublin now,men of property like me and second class, renting scum. This is the new Ireland and long may it continue.

  12. My rent is barely affordable for me, I swear if my land lord increases the rent I’m not paying the increase. More hassle for them to get me out I reckon.

  13. Bedsits – why the hell did they get rid of bedsits. It was perfect for single people, who at the early stages of moving out, figuring out incomes relationships etc, a bedsit was perfect. Now everyone must have an apartment, or the local authorities won’t give grants etc.

  14. And the Government are about 3 weeks away from the students returning which will only compound the issue further.

  15. Rental prices hot new all time high as supply plummets and greed sky rockets.

    Fixed it.

Just because you *can* charge €1600 p/m for a single bedroom apartment doesn’t mean you *should*

  16. With all of the crisis in our country these days there’s no way its going to last forever. I imagine in a decade (if even that) its all going to fall apart unless action is taken.

  17. When you plan to import the population size of a large town in Ireland what do you expect tbh, but this has only exasperated and accelerated a problem that was we where already having.

The problem is people don’t want to rent, but mortgage company’s and banks will barely lend money to people without jumping through stupid loops before they deme you finally worthy.

  18. Landlords that follow the rules are exiting the market.

Ones that don’t aren’t. Rents are going to keep going up.

  19. So uh….when are you guys going to vote for a government that’s going to fix it? Seems to me this has been a few decades now.
