I found this in a box with my great-great grandma’s and her second husband’s stuff. I am wondering what it is and whether it originated in Finland or Denmark.
The colors do give a Lapland vibe, but maybe the fur is not reindeer but some other animal? In my limited experience, reindeer hide is more colorful with whiter wavy lines included among the brown fur.
It’s a merkin for a giant – merkin – look it up
Groin sleeve
Is it real fur? Is the felt wool? If not, I’d say it’s something a kid did in their sewing class or something lol. Are the beads plastic? That could give you some idea of the age too. Blue and yellow are of course Swedish colours, but they are used in so many other places (Sami flag has both too) so I wouldn’t put too much weight on that.
I’m not an expert on Lapland stuff, but the beads don’t seem that authentic. At least I don’t remember seeing those before.
Can you put a baby inside? Btw, this certainly looks like an item from the Saami people, not Finnish.
