From “take back control” to “we thought we’d let people drive giant metal behemoths on the roads and not bother checking they know how first; anything but more foreigners”.
We’re all doomed!
Brilliant. And is there going to be extra insurance for these people?
How fast before this is reversed? Probably faster than lorry driven by a car licence holder.
Actually what ive seen is it will be like the old rules upto 7.5t (if you passed your test before 97) which I think is fine
If you can drive a lwb van you can drive a 7.5t
Or “*UK driving licence entitlements to revert to their pre 1997 state. ”*
They’re going to swap the red tape around checking driving proficiency for red tape around crash sites if this goes through.
I would consider being a HGV driver, if it didn’t cost so fucking much to get the licence
What could possibly go wrong?
put this on r/WCGW
What could possibly go wrong?
Just to point out, this is up to 7.5t – nothing remotely like an artic or anything. It’s mostly going to be different plated versions of common vans like the Mercedes sprinter.
I have a 3.5t sprinter that is mechanically identical to the 4t version – it’s just deliberately down played to allow it to be driven on a normal car licence. Anything without air brakes is basically just a big car.
Even air braked stuff is easy to get used to.
They need to allow psv drivers to drive trucks. I can drive a 13t coach, but take all the passenger seats out and I can’t legally drive it. It’s ridiculous!
How about just paying HGV drivers more and providing better facilities for them? Perhaps they wouldn’t have all fucked off then?
I have D category why not alow me to drive C aswell?
Christ on a bike, they’re going to let untrained idiots drive HGVs?
I hope when the inevitable smash happens it takes out one of those maniacs front wall. They only care when stuff affects them, so it’s our only hope.
It’s basically bringing back the old C1 licence grandfather rights. It’s not a dramatic disaster.
Or they could pay people a good wage? No?
What could go wrong

I did my HGV licence last year, I still need to do the CPC which is a ball ache trying to work out what parts you have to do.
I’ve contacted various agencies about part time work and none of them wanted me so the shortage can’t be that bad.
This is like allowing unlicensed people to buy and use assault rifles.
It doesn’t currently make sense that the rules for a 4.2T sprinter is the same as a 44T articulated the only difference being a class 2 vs class 1. CPC and tachos are all the same. Clearly the rules need relaxing for vehicles between 3.5T and 12T somewhat
Great, more cnuts overtaking for 25miles cos they are 1/2mph faster.
They should let those who have their 25m bronze swimming certificate pilot submarines and anyone who has done their CBT fly helicopters. Hopefully, Mr. Shapps next great idea will involve chewing on high voltage cables before dinner.
This’ll end in tears.
The one’s who’ve actually had HGV training are bad enough.
If only it was Brexit voters that suffered the consequences of this.
This anit gonna end well
I’m still salty I paid to get my B+E before they gave it to everyone.
I drive a 15 ton telescopic forklift after passing a vigorous course. This sounds like a bad idea..
As a truck driver of about 15 years, I can say without a doubt, this is fucking lethal and will get people killed.
I passed my test in 95 in a rover metro. Straight after that my boss stuck me in 20 year old 7.5 tonne death trap of a recovery truck and sent me out into the world to collect cars. I was terrified for the first year of driving that thing and its a miracle I didn’t do any serious damage in it. Driving a truck is nothing like driving a car and to go back to the old days seems like a very irresponsible move IMO. It would make way more sense for the government to pay for driver training rather than throwing the training out all together.
Umm…
Look I think that regulations can be annoying but I am safe driving a 1.2 ton Aidi A1.
Not a freaking HGV….
What about pcv drivers? Wouldn’t they be better for HGV drivers?
That’s gonna end well 🤦♂️ you seen what happens to people/cars that are caught under HGV’s
Sensationalist news articles on reddit? C’mon, this isn’t Facebook
Haha, stay off the motorways
This is such a bad idea, I’ve driven a transit van, hatchbacks and a Range Rover and every single one is different, and behaves differently on the road. Now you want to give people who may have only driven a hatchback control of a 40-tonne truck?
There is no shortage of hgv drivers, just thousands of poorly paying vacancies.
To any existing HGV drivers… What do you think of this?
Sounds safe.
This feels like it needs posting in /r/Whatcouldgowrong/
Currently, HGVs are 5% of the traffic in London but cause around 60% of cyclist deaths.
I can see this working out well
This country is a joke
So many jobs like this where the headlines are “Crisis in _____ sector due to lack of workers”
Me, a hardworking young person who would love to do something like this, that is comparatively well paid, being unable to even apply because of expensive qualifications and bureaucratic restrictions…
I used to own a 7.5T Volvo horse box and could drive it without an HGV licence. It took me me all of 20 minutes to get used to it.
I’m a new pass on my class two and honestly the thought of someone being able to jump in a wagon completely clueless is terrifying, sure it’s up to 7.5 ton but there is still a whole new style and thinking that’s needed when driving something of that size.
There’s a shortage of doctors too, I’m just saying…
The article conveniently skips over the fact they’re talking about “”””HGVs”””” up to 7.5 tons which is a return to pre 1997 rules. Not the giant ones in the picture.
Is this part of the green push to get more people to stop driving?
As if anyone can be behind the wheel of a lorry then… Nope. Not going near that thing.
