My main takeaway from hearing people talk about this show/book

  1. Appeals to the insufferable art student wans in College/just out of college who think they’re deep but their just pretentious… Louise o Neill/Una mullally types

  2. If it wasn’t for the nudity and sex scenes Normal People and Conversations with Friends wouldn’t even have registered on the viewership figures. They are shockingly bad. Terrible acting. Woeful stories. Barely any script. They are in the same category as Fifty Shades or that Polish thing 365 days but because they are about Trinity students the Dublin intelligentsia wrote glowing reviews.

  3. You’re giving Sally Rooney much too much credit if you think she did anything except attempt to live vicariously through her characters while shoehorning her empty knowledge of philosophy

  4. Each obviously to their own, but I simply do not understand the hype around Sally Rooney. Admittedly I only read Conversations with Friends, but I found the writing style so simplistic (not that that’s necessarily a bad thing, but I’ve read books where that simple writing style was done a whole lot better) the characters either one-dimensional or annoying, and the plot lines uninteresting. I see her described in so many places as one of the best Irish writers out there at the moment and I’m baffled.

  5. Well yes , but actually yes.

Also Normal People was (from what I can tell) those two people from your group in college who hook up first freshers week , and lose all whatever personality and interesting features they had and just meld into one boring couple creature*. But no one can quite get around to kicking them out of the group , so you’re stuck with them , gazing into each others eyes , finishing each others sandwiches and just generally sucking all the craic out of the room** .

*(Bonus points if they already have the same or similar first names , like Pat and Pat , Rob and Robin , ,Simon and Simone [although oddly enough the couple I knew in college with those names were actually sound ] or Chris and Tina)

**(Traditionally they will either immediately get married after college and become that boring couple so bland you actually assume they have to be serial killers , or have a blazing breakup/meltdown that destroys everything around them .)
