Armed police sent to heart attack patients as crisis-hit NHS buckles under surging demand

  1. As someone who emigrated away from the UK, this is honestly one of the main reasons why I have no plans to come back. The absolute shocking state that the Tories have left the NHS in makes me feel like it’s literally not safe to live there any more.

  2. I mean yea this is shocking but even if the NHS was properly funded there wouldn’t always be an ambulance right there. Armed police cars carry AED and whilst it’s obviously not and shouldn’t be their priority, I’d rather have them help when they have the capacity.

  3. I work very closely with paramedics and I can tell you there are more ambulances on the road than ever before, there are two main issues, the first is long waits to book people in at A and E and the second is people calling ambulances and going to A and E when they don’t need to.

  4. ‘….as NHS buckles under surging demand due to a concerted Conservative effort to underfund snd mismanage the NHS into the ground’.

That part is constantly fucking left out.

  5. This isn’t shocking news (pun intended) if a police vehicle with an AED is closer and can make within 5 mins while an ambulance may take 10-15 mins it just makes sense?

  6. I work within the NHS so i have experienced both sides of it. The staff are amazing, but they literally cannot be in 8 places at once. There’s not enough staffing in place. The tories have fucked us again and again, year after year, depleting resources each time. Nevermind recruiting staff, we cannot RETAIN the staff we have! People have had enough. Long hours, unpaid hours, not much benefit, managers relying on the goodwill of staff to fill gaps. It’s awful, and it will buckle very very soon.

  7. The majority of people who call for an ambulance do not require it.

    I say majority, I mean like 80-90%. It’s crazy.

  8. Here it comes, get ready for privatisation! Finally give the people what they want, they did vote for it in 2019 after all.

  9. Yep, the Tories are running it in the ground, and they going to do it more, by cutting taxes, instead of putting wages up. It won’t belong till they’ve made it so bad, that the Tories will say, The only alternative is to sell it, ie privatise it, so all the rich can buy shares into it. That is there intention. When all it needs, is tax money to keep it running, but as said Tories are talking tax cut for people, which means less money for the NHS. People need higher wages, not tax cuts.

  10. Fuck the tories, this isn’t surging demand this is long-term deliberate underfunding so they can justify privatising the NHS. The NHS even when it was properly funded was one of the cheapest medical services in the world, Germany spend more money and the US over double as much.

  11. Hmm……see, I’ve heard these ideas touted for years, and also the same for fire crews.

On the face of it, it seems sensible to me for something like a heart attack where speed of response is seen as a huge factor in survivability.

I find myself wondering if the “because nhs is collapsing” is really more just the press message, because the scheme overall sounds good

Similar schemes from before involving fire crews, advertised as a good thing:

    https://www.theguardian.com/society/2015/sep/22/heart-attack-firefighter-devon-somerset-ambulance

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-29550872

If armed police are now being equipped with AED’s routinely, then it seems like a good idea

  12. The problem with this article is that the attention grabbing headline says they’re being sent to people who are having heart attacks, but the quote they’re basing it on says that they’re being sent to cardiac arrests.

Should police be dispatched to cardiac arrests? Absolutely, everyone should know CPR, so even the public should help…… there’s even an app so off duty people with some element of medical training can be sent.

Are police being sent to heart attacks? No they’re not.

It’s absolutely dire reporting and I suspect encouraged by the individual who made the statement.

  13. And it’s by design. The Tories want a for-profit healthcare system, so they’re sabotaging the NHS. And people die from preventable conditions in the meantime.

Is anyone surprised the Tories kill people for money?

  14. Well, now I know what my mum was talking about. She was taken into hospital Friday morning – in an ambulance with actual paramedics thankfully! And said that A&E was full of police officers who seemed to be bringing patients in. Didn’t think much of it at the time, but makes sense now.

  15. Working in the nhs I’m hearing increasingly worrying stories about ambulance waiting times and people dying as a consequence. It’s terrifying.

  16. As a comparison, in the US some ambulances are red and run by the fire department, and I think some and run by the police, then some are just ambulances.

As bad as the situation is here at least someone (the police) is stepping in and doing something. Police especially the armed response unit are medically trained.

  17. As a Police Officer this is sub is fucking wild.

It’s not just armed officers, as soon as a shout comes out, any car with a defib will be making way as fast as possible? Why? Because it’s our fucking job.Journo nonsense.

  18. So what happens? You are having a heart attack and suddenly your door gets kicked in and guys in body armour are running around your house waving H&Ks and screaming “You’re surrounded by armed bastards!”

  19. Such a bullshit article. I’m sure police have responded to a heart attack, the call will often go to both police and ambulance. They are trained to offer help and if they’re in the area closer than the ambulance they will respond.

The idea they are being called out by the NHS to cover is utter BS.
