Remember That Aul Housing Crisis back in the day….

  1. Well tbf you can’t just build more houses can you? There’s a labour shortage right now.

…they said in the 90s, 00s and beyond.

  2. *New look mortgages* are the last thing we need to solve the housing crisis

Building more housing is the only way to solve the housing crisis. Anything else is at best ineffective and at worst counterproductive.

  3. The government needs to set up a national social housing building agency. That agency should have clear targets on how many houses they need to produce a year. It should be well funded and should operate at full capacity during both boom and bust. House building should never be shut down or scaled back just because the country is going through an intermittent slow down or even recession. The rate of social housing construction should be based on well-founded projected requirements over the long term.

The dependance on the private sector to deliver affordable housing at acceptable rates just does not work. The construction of private housing can continue the way it is, but the government need to take full responsibility for the delivery of social housing from planning to completion stage. The funding of this should be enshrined in our long term capital spending plans and should never be reduced just because we enter into a period of economic stagnation or recession. Just buying social housing from private developers doesn’t really cut it.

  4. This time its going to affect the government because there is no emigration, lots of immigration and a young, highly educated group of young people who are not voting the way their parents and grandparents did.

  5. Rates of homelessness and rising rents are comparable to today for the same period? It’s actually quaint, that talk of a housing crisis was that people were having a hard time buying a home…we’re well past that point now.
