To prevent a recession and grow the economy we have to protect workers’ rights

  1. So do they think the UK can create it’s own protective bubble?

Recession has been forecast for Europe, China, Japan, and the USA. Cycles of boom and bust happen all the time, when this one hits it will be the 6th since the 1970’s, not including the two quarters during Covid.

Giving people more money and trying to spend your way out of it has failed in the past, the last example of this was Gordon Brown’s Government. Even the head of the Bank of England has said it’s inflation that needs tackling, and that you can’t simply try to spend your way out of it.

  2. I don’t think there’s any preventing a recession at this point. We’re probably already in a recession

  3. Workers rights alone won’t help inflation. We really needed the infrastructure available to generate new energy and store some gas for a rainy day… Instead there has been nothing but stripping of the country’s assets.

We can’t evade inflation entirely, but we could have really taken the hurt out of the most recent ones with a proper economic policy. Successive governments failed to invest properly in infrastructure, mixed with stagnant wages, and circumstances of the past 10 years… I am so glad I’m not an economist

  4. > The Bank of England expects the UK economy to plunge into recession later this year. The main reason is that workers’ wages are failing to keep pace with inflation and people inevitably reduce discretionary expenditure.

That’s really *not* the main reason.

The entire article is based on a false premise.

  5. Government won’t. Unions might. You know what to do.

Unions were a big part in getting the rights we have today. We can use unions again not only to maintain them but also to improve them.

  6. Good luck, the Tories are trying to get power away from unions and Labour won’t support action. Voiceless and powerless, governments have us where they want us. Oh just wait for the attack on the courts.

  7. “Yeah no shit” – Any reasonable person

“Nah, that can’t be it” – Tory voters

It turns out a healthy economy built on citizen spending needa secure workers with decent pay to actually function. Who knew?

Oh right, non-Conservatives have known for years and have said so for as long.
