I’ll be happy to not pay if one of these pressure groups is going to do it for me, because I don’t fancy being cut off and taken to court.
the government have already built in a fail-safe – the £400 of your own money the government are giving back to you is actually going direct to the energy companies. They’re good for a month even if no one pays their fucking bill.
Is there no disobedience we can carry out that’s even more civil, and guaranteed not to result in problems? For example, tying up their support lines or forcing them to come out on call for checks that aren’t strictly necessary?

(how else can a charity pay its CEO competitively and its floor-staff zero!)
Lol at the genuine establishmental fear of this movement. Even the bbc getting involved now.
Folks, if you’re so afraid of this movement, why not do something about energy prices before we get to such an extreme process? Or should everyone just eat cake?
I can’t see many people doing it this year but next year I can see haft the country not paying
Something needs to happen price cap needs to go back down to it’s before April rise & these companies need to make abit less profit
There talking about nearly 4k a year next year! Yeah I’m not/can’t pay that 😅
Seriously though what choice do people have?
Wonder if that’s real charitable institutions that run from donations by the public or charities that receive some sort of government funding?
You don’t pay, eventually you’ll be put on pre payment meter and ever time you buy credit it will take some extra for what you didn’t pay them before. So not only is it more expensive to have a pre payment meter it now means the power companies can’t cut you off, you do it yourself to save them the hassle.
The don’t pay movement is similar to the poll tax but the energy companies won’t lose out and the ones who can afford, just, to pay will end up making up any difference.
Which charities warn people against not paying? The article doesn’t say. It’s the damn headline of the article and there’s not a word of who actually said that.
Yes, because this is how you spiral into debt.
I’ve got such mixed feelings. On the one hand, non violent direct action, which sounds great. On the other I just worry because it’s always the people who can least afford it who get shafted whenever anything happens.
I hope that my worries are unfounded and this really does get some kind of result. Because I cannot see how the country keeps ticking over when larger and larger proportio of our people can’t afford to live and the others can’t afford to help
also: remember to pay your poll tax!
What if you can’t pay.
For most people, it’s not a case of deciding not to play. They literally can’t. These energy companies are making record profits, and people are literally dying. The government needs to step in to protect the poor, and it won’t, because the Tories hate peasants.
The BBC infographic about saving money only comes up with a paltry £174. Why did they even bother?
I still think it’s worth signing up even if you have no intention to actually do it. Sends a message
My supplier has already sent out requests for information on exactly who
pays the bill and will use credit agencies to act on their behalf when faced with non payment of bills 😂
My Dad is an alcoholic. Hasn’t paid his gas or electric for two years. Wracked up a £2900 bill. Worst they’ve done is send a letter and threaten him with court action 🤷♂️
>Analysts are forecasting the typical customer is likely to pay £3,358 a year from October, up from £1,971 a year in April.
I’m old enough to remember when people thought £1,971 was really expensive. Way back in early 2022 I think, but it seems so long ago.
All people had to worry about back then was a deadly pandemic, massive food inflation, a rogue PM, and the very real possibility of nuclear war.
The good old days as we now call them.
It takes several months and plenty of warning before they send the bailiffs on you. If everybody stopped their DD, delayed payment by two months, the energy companies would feel it.
Charities can warn against it, but many people will genuinely have to do it!
Might as well just switch off the boiler for a month… If you don’t pay, then it’ll be off anyway… If you do pay, it’ll be off the next month because you’ll have no money left.
Lots of FUD being pumped out in the press about this (Guardian been keeping that line at the top for a couple days now 😂) The actual headline should be, “Remember: the full violence of the government backed UK financial and legal systems are ready to crush to the populace if they do anything vaguely revolutionary.”
Just a reminder that the British press literally exists to perpetually sew division and inhibit solidarity.
Getting a CCJ will affect your credit rating (and therefore whether you get credit and how much it costs) and employment prospects for a long time. If that doesn’t worry you, then fine, go for it.
Does anyone know who is behind this ‘Don’t Pay’ group?
