Satellite image of north-west europe

  1. Oh it’s 2018 all over again. Somebody tell me we at least did something to lessen the impact this time around

  2. I’m living in one of the brown looking areas, but it doesn’t look that dry if I look out of the window. Why does the satellite image look so brown? I mean, yes, there are some areas where the grass is gone, but I’m not living in a fucking desert. There is still plenty of grass left, and other plants, and trees…

  3. I know you just copied the titel from the other sub but I’m not sure if this is north-west Europe as it includes a part of Spain and cuts off England, doesn’t show Ireland and Iceland.

    Having said that, interesting pic!

  4. You can see these maps [here](https://worldview.earthdata.nasa.gov/?v=-0.12915204547916037,46.191134937294734,4.429098743494907,55.25493997432987&l=Reference_Labels_15m(hidden),Reference_Features_15m(hidden),Coastlines_15m,VIIRS_NOAA20_CorrectedReflectance_TrueColor(hidden),VIIRS_SNPP_CorrectedReflectance_TrueColor(hidden),MODIS_Aqua_CorrectedReflectance_TrueColor,MODIS_Terra_CorrectedReflectance_TrueColor&lg=true&t=2022-08-10-T13%3A29%3A36Z). At the moment the card is dated at 10 august

  5. It’s sensational bullshit.

[Oh wait the planet doesn’t magically turn into a dessert after just a few months…](https://imgur.com/t04XWzW)

The camera on a satellite doesn’t use the sensor that you have in your phone. Otherwise they would just photograph clouds for most of the year.
They use the colour spectrums outside our vision to take photographs. Different wavelengths for different purposes. Then they develop algorithms to give those [uninteresting](https://imgur.com/eIrSMt1) [photos](https://imgur.com/UNZSu44) a “real” colour post-processing so they can post something on their Twitter. (Disclaimer: those uninteresting photos are actually also already post-processed so a human can see something)
Those algorithms work nice in normal times because there are plenty examples to develop them very accurate. But when it does get extremely dry, there is few to no historical data to accurately model the algorithms. (And as a programmer I’ll also tell you that you won’t be given the unproportionate time it takes to program these edge cases anyway. You’re told they will never happen and you content yourself with that or don’t sleep at night.)
In this case a drought a bit more than usual results in a very skewed post-proces colouring.

[Here is the true colour though](https://imgur.com/a5h6bKt) a few hours after the picture from OP.

And if you don’t believe it, just look outside. It’s green outside aside from the newly harvested wheat fields and people’s stupid lawns.
