Irish homes and firms will be asked to cut peak-time power use to avoid winter blackouts

  1. You learn something new everyday ”People will also be asked to turn off their hobs when their food is nearly cooked, and instead use the built-up heat to finish cooking food.”

  2. I learnt recently that there is an entire procedure called a “Black Start, Blue Alert”. If 50% or more of the grid is hit by a blackout, they can restart the grid by using the dams. Since they can restart without external power, also known as a black start.

But its apparently a very long process, and requires a tonne of work in the background as all the generation plants need to be inspected for damage, and the process to synchronize the grid is a bit of a headache/total nightmare as they need to load balance the voltage, frequency, and overall power generation from the plants. And thats not accounting for any damage to substation, power lines and all the parts involved in transmission.

Also the whole restart process can in itself cause even more damage if the engineers managing the process get things wrong.

    Fun stuff.

  3. Can’t imagine it happening to much as it’s peak times for a reason everyone comes home pretty much at the same time and if they need a shower because there covered in sweat from a labouring job we’re not gonna ask them to sit in it for the next 3 hours. Along with making dinner and sitting to watch tv/ popping on a wash or finishing off a wash from before work by popping it on the dryer before finally going to bed.
