[Electricity costs estimated to go up by 35% after gas price increase](https://today.rtl.lu/news/luxembourg/a/1952814.html)

> For households, this will mean that they pay around €300 more per year for electricity, says Claude Simon, who is in charge of energy sales at Enovos.
>
>He further explained that this has to do with the spike in gas costs:  “**Electricity is partially produced with the help of gas**. With gas prices spiking, they also impact the price of electricity.” People might thus be forced to not only conserve petrol and gas, but also electricity come winter.

Well, for sure there must be some confusion here, as they sell their electricity as “100% green” (/s)

How is it possible that their “certified renewable sources” (sic), “100% green” (sic) electricity “produced by hydropower in Europe” (sic) will be affected by changes in natural gas prices? They use 0% of natural gas according to their marketing material. 🤔

I’m very curious how are they going to respond, if at all, to my inevitable complaints if my “100% green” (sic) electricity bill goes up because natural gas price hikes.

I wonder what kind of consumer protection laws we have against false advertisement… Probably a question for UCL.

  1. Their answer will be around green electricity being always more expensive than non-green, because of the premiums they pay to the producers, on top of the non-green prices.

It’s a somehow liberalized market, feel free to change providers.

  2. I think the issue is wholesale prices for electricity in Europe going up. Given that there’ll be (i) more demand for electricity of any kind due to consumers switching from gas to electricity (where possible) and (ii) gas-fuelled electricity production being more expensive, wholesale electricity prices will increase. This in turn has a price impact on RE-only energy portfolios as wholesellers can sell RE for higher prices.

So basically there are secondary impacts on RE based on gas price hikes.

  3. For EU parlement, green electricity can be made of nuclear and natural gas.
But price are getting higher because electricity market is going up in general. Electricity is traded like cereals, oil and gas.

  4. I think this is the maket, higher prices in gas will lead them to find cheaper sources, so higher demand aswell for them an thus prices on the rise for them.
