The State of Belgian top-flight (1e Nationale A & B) football, anno 2022:
19/27 (70,3%) = owned by foreign people/concerns
11/27 (40,7%) = main sponsor is sports betting business
Why should Singapore or Malaysia be highlighted in red as if it is a negative thing?
Paul Gheysens made millions with real estate deals in Cyprus involving Russian oligarch and the owner of KV Mechelen is actively involved in fraud…
Are we even surprised?
You should watch the ‘Fever Pitch’ documentary on vrtnu about the first years of the Premier League and it’s very clear that Belgian football is still a relatively cheap investment to make. Only years ago you could go for cheap to Westerlo and see a team play with local sponsors. Now even they are in the hands of a Turkish guy.
If you compare that to American sports where every game is a 100 dollar event, now is the time to jump on the bandwagon and buy a club that in a financially sane world would never have the right to still exist.. The PL did that 25 years ago and is now a multi billion euro business, in 20 years time it will double or triple for the Belgian teams as well. It will be still peanuts compared to American sports or even the PL, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we go to 60-75 euro tickets in the not so distant future and people will keep coming.
Of course it’s also a benefit that you practically can do money laundering and human trafficking while being still heavily sponsored by the government. And if it fails, you run the club dry, you let the club go bankrupt and your problems disappear. It’s not like we hold anybody accountable for clear and proven fraud.
And then sports betting… Again, are we surprised? Or do we believe clubs want the best for their fans? Those clubs know full well that statistically most of their fans that use those betting sites will lose money, now part of those losses go to the clubs. But what is a good sponsor? Crypto sites? Banks who get rich from holding your money, but insist intrest is a hoax? Beer brands so we can encourage Belgians national alcohol problem even more?
Owner of Zulte Waregem is Tony beeuwsaert not anymore willy Naessens. Still a regional guy. Your info shows how rare this is.
