Hi everyone! Recently my wife and I moved to Luxembourg from a third country, and during the declaration of arrival we were told we have to register our civil partnership for the taxes (I understand that is not a legal obligation). 1. The birth certificates have to be apostilled? From the link above I understand that the partnership declaration is the only document that has to be apostilled, isn’t it?
2. Same question for the translations: The birth certificates have to be translated? I think they should be translated at least.
3. We don’t have any visa or authorization on our passports that indicate we can stay for more than 3 months, we do have temporary authorizations and currently we are in the process to get the residence permit. Which document can be used as a proof that we can stay for more than 3 months?
4. And the last question, where is the city register to register our civil partnership and to provide the supporting documents?

Any experience with this regard will be appreciated. Thanks and have a nice day!

  1. 1. I understand same as you that only the partnership form has to be apostilled not the birth certificates

    2. Depends on the language they are in – I would assume English is fine. Check if a sworn translation is needed. I can send you a link to one if needed/email address that I have used for our own application

    3. I would either wait until your permit is issued or see if you can use the temp authorization/declaration of arrival

    Pro tip : administrations in Luxembourg usually pick up the phone and answer questions, you might want to call the Civil Register to inquire – same as for translations needed

    4. The address of the Register is provided at the very bottom of the link you sent – it’s by the other civil courthouses in Luxembourg City (“cité judiciaire”)

  2. Yesterday I went to the Bierger-Center, first floor. There I was told to go to the Bâtiment commun in the Cité judiciaire, but once there unfortunately they aren’t attending face to face, only by appointment to submit the documents. They gave me phone number and mail to make the appointment.

    I tried the rest of the morning calling the phone number but to not avail. Also I’ve written a mail inquiring for information. Today I’ll keep calling and see if I have any luck.
