Truss promises tax cuts not ‘handouts’ to tackle cost-of-living crisis

  1. How is a tax cut different to a handout? She is dog whistling to those who think only the “workshy unemployed” get “handouts”, not realising, or not caring, that a lot of the welfare spend is on the working poor just above the tax threshhold.

Tax cuts ALWAYS benefit the better off disproportionately (unless the upper rate is increased to compensate, which defeats the whole point of the excercise).

Also, disappointed that the monster corporation tax cut a few years back went unchallenged by the question “which services will you cut to pay for it?

Edit : The government answer to the above question is, of course, “Yes”

  2. How is a tax cut going to help those struggling most, who often are paying a notional amount of income tax if they’re paying any at all.

  3. Tax cuts won’t even help the people who need the help the most, many of them earn below the 12,000 thresholds or barely pay any tax which would not make a difference if it is cut.

  4. British politics is now exclusively an exercise in fantasy wish fulfillment – they aren’t even trying to address the problems anymore, because the problems *are the point*.

There’s a few comments in here like this “why aren’t they being held to account?” and “why aren’t the media asking this question?” – it’s because you’re looking at it the wrong way.

The Tories have always been about dismantling government and returning to the days of the East India Company’s domination of the globe – and that’s not hyperbole, it’s objectively true. If they could remove all regulations and legal restrictions on business – including slavery & child labour – they would in an instant.

In their opinion a government exists to raise an army (of poor people) to defend the nation and deal with diplomacy, and occasionally expansionist wars to increase the scope of capitalism – that’s it.

Everything else they consider a gross overreach of their remit – the things we think the government is for, like upholding the law equally, justice, freedom, democracy.

To the conservatives these are hurdles to be removed, false idols to be torn down – they always have been.

We’re just in the consolidation phase where because they control all the capital (and have done for some time) they don’t even need to try and hide it anymore – they’re just openly contemptuous of the rest of us.

  5. Businesses rarely bother giving pay rises to employees even with record profits and only give anything if they “get something from the employee in return” and even then its a pathetic amount, so what does she think cutting Corporation Tax is going to achieve?

“Hey lads. Great news! Profits are up due to less Tax to pay! Huzzah! Put the dividend up and give out the payrises and bonuses!”

    “To the Workers Sir?”

“Haha. Very funny! Of course not. They haven’t worked hard enough to justify one as usual. Lazy sods. Have HR send out a few redundancy notices to keep them in line for next year’s record profits!”

“Of course Sir, it shall be done post haste! Where would we be without your magnificent leadership!”

  6. Hahahahahahaha i think someone meant to label this satirical because thats funny a tory cutting tax.

Next she’ll say she’ll increase child benefits and wages across the board by 10% while ending bankers bonuses.

  7. The poor are already below the threshold for paying tax, so tax breaks won’t help them with the cost of living at all, and since the energy companies can’t be reigned in (apparently) that means there will have to be “handouts” as she calls them. In a rigged system this is like giving back a finger after cutting off a hand.

  8. It’s a handout for the ‘right sort’ of people that Truss likes, not those she thinks brought their situation upon themselves. Unlike Sunak though, she is not going to admit that sort of thing out loud so that she can hoodwink average people into voting for her.

  9. The bare faced arrogance is absolutely breathtaking…..no more handouts? Remind me Liz how many public handouts you get..? Reducing taxes only helps those who pay it. Plus, you’re not really reducing net taxes if you’re just reversing your recent increases? Also, those on low incomes and in greatest need of support don’t pay much if any tax. Tackle the inflation problem you were responsible for
Sort out the privatised energy sector you created – reintroduce energy cap to fix bills in light of Energy companies record profits..
Serve the needs of the U.K. people, not just those who pay you

  10. Tax cuts don’t help if you’re not earning enough to pay tax or a pensioner.

No such thing as ‘trickledown economics’.

  11. The problem of course is that the UK economy actually needs the majority of it’s citizens to be fairly well-off, without that state it all starts to fall over.

Liz Truss is probably quite stupid and doesn’t understand what she is saying, but the people having her say it must be quite dim also because running the middle-class into the ground is not going to be helpful to anyones cause.

  12. Well at least the labour party might have a chance of Winning the next election.

I prefer Sunak but if they pick Truss we can have some Poll tax style riots and then a Labour government for a change.

Keep an eye on social media. Direct action against utilities and energy corps incoming along the lines of if we cant afford energy then nobody can have it. Russia may or may not be involved.
