They’re pretty tasty, I’m surprised there hasn’t been a push to catch and eat them.
Terrible advice, it’s very hard for a novice to distinguish between the two species, so this could see the rare native crayfish getting stabbed up.
“Creepy river creature”
Creepy crayfish..oh the horrors
Removing the head or destroying the brain, now where have I heard that before…
It’s a bloody crawfish, not a creepy river monster.
Sounds like a reasonable excuse to carry a knike.
Carte blanche to carry knives then?
Conservatives better stop going door to door.
Thought it was illegal to carry knifes?
Couldn’t they have just called it an American signal crayfish in the headline? Can’t stand tabloid nonsense.
I wrote my undergrad thesis on crayfish. Happy days. I can’t remember a bloody thing about them.
The canal and river trust explicitly ban any form of crayfish destruction – including trapping by would-be-licensed folk with equipment and knowledge on how to trap them. Completely blanket ban which doesn’t necessarily help given how inter connected the navigable waterways are with the rest of the ecosystem.
Most anglers i know have been doing this for years anyway.
How is this just news , us fisherman have been doing this for the last 20 + years 🙄
I have never seen a crayfish from that angle. Didn’t know they could look even more ugly.
When I was younger another guy was fishing them by hand in a river. Got loads of them. We impaled them on sticks, Vlad style.
Wonder if we should have tried sticking a few on the campfire for dinner, but we had no idea if they could be cooked safely or not.
Just cook and eat it.
And that was how the last of our native crayfish was smashed under a rock.
Who’s first thought on seeing a freaky creature is to instantly stab it in the head?! Leave them be
