NHS doctor found dead endured ‘overwhelming’ pressures from work, husband claims

  1. What a truly sad story. Just WHEN will this impossible situation be sensibly resolved?

My own GP, totally professional and committed, told me, ‘The NHS ruined my health’

So many patients cannot get an appointment to see a GP. In my surgery most patients wouldn’t even recognise any of the ‘invisible’ GPs. Also, the GPs decide if and whom they will see in person plus deciding whether they can be bothered even to phone a patient in need!

Total, crass irresponsibility. Where, oh where, have service and professional standards disappeared?

An awful indictment which should not exist nor be allowed to continue without radical change.

  2. I work as a GP. Unfortunately I didn’t know this GP personally; however one of the GPs at the practice I work at did, having worked with her several years ago. They shared with us the experience of having worked with this truly dedicated professional who put her patients first and was always there when colleagues needed someone to turn to for support and a sympathetic ear.

It was heartbreaking when my colleague shared the post they received from the husband explaining what had happened.

I would love to say that this was an isolated incident but sadly it is not. Since I qualified as a doctor I have had 2 close friends and colleagues commit suicide due to the workload, pressure and fear of making a mistake. I know of many other similar cases that do not get the attention they deserve.

  3. It’s scary how little comments there are on this Reddit post that should scream alarm bells on how severely medical staff are overworked in the UK. Is it because it is the end of the week?

  4. This just makes me really angry. The morally bankrupt government are trying to run the health service into the ground as an excuse to sell it off for profit. In the mean time this is having real and tragic effects on people’s lives.

  5. It’s so sad to see this and hear of more stories like this – I have no doubt this will continue to happen and possibly increase in frequency.

People are at breaking point – the “regular public”. Now imaging throwing on top of that:

    – A pandemic meaning you’re running at 100% for YEARS without a break
    – Having to work well beyond the normal 37.5/40 hours a week and that’s *expected*
    – A general opinion from the public that is “yeah but wait times are your PERSONAL fault and you just want people to die and you get paid too much”
    – Not getting paid enough
    – Again, not getting paid enough, after literally working your arse off during COVID and still having the above opinion about you

That’s what GPs, doctors etc have to deal with. God forbid you’re a junior doctor as not only do people have extra opinions about that, but you’re then severely underpaid for the privilege of saving someone’s life in A&E 👍🏻

They should strike. All of them. Doctors, nurses, porters etc. If the public think that rail strikes are annoying, wait until you can’t have any elective surgeries or get a bed at a hospital. Maybe then there will be a bit more appreciation for what these people in healthcare do for us given the insurmountable issues at the moment.

  6. The root cause to this as usual is a lack of funding for more healthcare staff by government. An utter shame at the loss of life, tragic, and most frustratingly, preventable.

Expecting a shrinking workforce to make up for work that should otherwise be shared between a greater amount of staff is unsustainable. I just don’t understand how the public can’t see that beyond putting up easy feel good nonsense posters about “Thank you NHS workers” etc.

Put your money where your mouth is and demand the government increase funding. Talk to your local MP, show solidarity in protests for health workers than belittling them, VOTE for another fucking government and make it clear to the incoming one they’ll be axed in the next elections if they don’t do anything. Not these empty platitudes stuck on cars and walls.

Truth is, our public is simply inept and lazy. We just can’t be arsed. Much easier to complain online (ironically as I am).

My own mother quit as a nurse a long while ago, and she’s some of the most hardworking people I know. She couldn’t hack it after a year due to the ridiculous work load and trying to balance that with having a big family at home. I’m talking stupid shifts, doing both days and nights throughout. It’s unreasonable. Can’t imagine what it’s like now.
