Ending direct provision by end of 2024 in doubt as department officials admit ‘challenging target’ – Independent.ie

  1. Should we massively ramp up the processing speed instead?

Change the system to restrict and remove the number of appeals?

Immediately deport anyone who is likely to be refused permanent entry to free up space?

I’m not being funny or anything, but what exactly is it that people want here?

  2. It was such a stupid idea anyways. We cant house Irish people and you want to give unprocessed asylum seekers their own door accomodation? Like how stupid are they to think that was ever possible

  3. They could fix it tomorrow if they wanted:

Automatic refusal and on-the-day deportation for any applicants from Albania or Georgia. Every applicant from those countries means one less visa issued to the country the following year.

Automatic refusal of any applicant who destroys their identity documents with no pathway, ever, to citizenship or permanent residence.

For all other applicants, one appeal, to be filed within a month of refusal, and immediate deportation on the refusal of the appeal with any subsequent appeal to be made from outside Ireland.

Recruit and train a panel of retired judges to fly through the backlog and make decisions.

  4. It’s basically impossible when you fastrack through and prioritise 50k people who don’t even qualify for International Protection.

  5. Stop entertaining economic migrants with no visas who have no right to be here then, and you’ll solve your problem. If they’re not a refugee they’re not welcome through the system. It’s that simple. We need to stop taking the dregs of what Europe wouldn’t take

  6. So what’s the end game to ending direct provision? Are we departing and denying appeals? Granting automatic work rights? Granting automatic social welfare support?

  7. We need to know more about these officials. I suspect they are making the decisions and have been for a long time.
