Maltese roads at night. You genuinely feel unsafe thanks to the complete lack of enforcement… from malta

  1. I urge everyone to do like this lady/gentleman and invest in a dash cam. I am afraid to drive without one nowadays.

  2. On my trips to Malta when I was a teen I never understood the lack of overhead lighting on the roads, like they don’t expect people to drive at night or something.

  3. Road from zabbar to marsascala by night. Near head to head collision twice in one week because someone needs to pass a “slow” car.

  4. The problem is attitude and now traffic law enforcement.

Even if you go extreme and make people have a leaners license for a full year with 200+ hours of supervised driving tutoring before getting the real license, or starting driver education and training in the final year of high school, or forcing a practical and theory exam at each license renewal, it won’t help if people don’t give a shit about others or the laws.

  5. One of these happens like every week, from Mellieha to Pieta and back, and Mellieha to Ahrax and back. Maybe im growing old, but it’s useless driving over 60 km/h in this country, mostly due to shit like this.

  6. I am a runner, a daily runner. I used to go for a run at around 8pm when my daughter falls asleep, now I just do a work out at home. I am too scared to run on my own, at any given time.

10 years ago, I used to run from Fgura to Tarxien Paola and back daily at 9pm.

  7. People blinding you with brights is the worst. I literally have to come to a complete stop sometimes because otherwise i might just drift into them or the wall…

  8. Please tell me I’m not the only one terrified driving in Malta. Every day travelling from home to work and vice versa is a struggle for me, especially truck drivers and builders. The ones I come across are just so incredibly careless and reckless. It’s so tiring. If only public transportation was more efficient I would wholeheartedly use it.

  9. I was driving in Malta a few years ago. I was going through a roundabout late at night. I entered the normal way turning left. The guy a few hundred metres behind me decided to straight through driving over the divider. Almost took me out.

  10. i applaud you – i have forwarded a few to the police. After I have provided the footage with stills clearly showing the number plates I have been asked to testify on occasions which is something i will not do. Then there are police who say they will take action without telling me to testify.

  11. Having no lights in certain streets is acceptable, especially if they’re rural and not as frequently used.

Enforcement is zero, I’ve seen everyone from escooter users to the police/LESA themselves breaking certain rules. The police/LESA know that they have no power at times. What I find odd is that they will not be able to use such videos as evidence for some reason. That’s what I’ve been told.

My biggest gripe with all of this is when people use the full-beam when driving at night. It literally blinds you. I then proceed to turn on my full-beam and then the fog lights if they don’t desist.

  12. Thanks for sharing. Honestly it is not so far from the day time occurrences… Enforcement is definitely needed, but in most countries where the government actually care to reduce traffic deaths it is a combination of enforcement, build for safety, alternative modes of transport, driver training/attitude and getting unsafe vehicles off the road asap. At the moment we have neither. It is up to us to push politicians and law-makers.
