  2. Fair fucks to him.

I know very little about chess but will this sort of performance move him closer to an invite to the candidates tournaments?

  3. This is great, as a long time (but terrible) chess player Ive always been hoping for some more Irish representation. Hopefully this will inspire more Irish to get into the game. Well done Conor!

  4. Is touch move still a thing? I remember playing in primary school in chess club and that rule was so dumb at the time. For those that don’t know, touch move is when you touch a chess piece and you can then only move that piece and no other.

  5. Wasn’t he one of only 5 players with a perfect record in the open section until a couple of days ago? Yer man Peter Leko was saying he should be playing on Board 1.

  6. Great stuff. I am wondering though, unless it’s purely down to numbers, why are there no female players there? It’s hardly gender segregated?

  7. This really is an absolutely exceptional performance by Murphy.

Some of his games have been incredible to behold. He’s not just winning- he’s giving absolutely no respect to these famous grandmasters (i.e. on paper *much* stronger players than him) that he’s playing. He’s winning in style.

In his last game, his (on paper) *much* stronger GM opponent offered him a draw fairly early into the game. Conor turned it down, backed himself, and went on to win convincingly.

What’s funny is he’s playing on our board 2. He’s not even supposed to be the best player on the 5-person Ireland team – let alone arguably the best performing player in a tournament of hundreds.

  8. He’s been incredible but he has played nearly every game with white. Wonder if he would struggle in future tournaments that are more balanced

  9. Queen’s Gambit got me into chess because it managed to combine chess with a ketamine addiction and make it into a damn good story. I wonder if Conor is railing lines of ket in his gaff, looking up at the ceiling and playing out every strategy.
