For those who think we don’t have the same type of religious crazies America does,
‘I have had credible death threats over the years sometimes requiring the very kind assistance of the police hate crime squad. Each and every one of those threats has come from an evangelical Christian.’

  1. This is a shit show and the church of England have basically just told a lot of people they frankly hate them. As a member of the LGBT+ community the amount of influence the church has is wild, I think there are still bishops in the house of Lords.

I think the COE used to be good at hiding this kick of shitty views and I’m pleased they are being pushed into the open.

  2. Archbishop isn’t really incorrect though is he, in saying that gay sex is incompatible with the Bible?

At the risk of coming across a bit edgy r/atheism type here, Rather than appealing to higher-ups in the church to disavow their own religion, it seems more logical to appeal to people to disavow the church instead. The head of an antiquated belief system is obviously going to share the antiquated beliefs isn’t he, it’s not surprising. Why expect anything of the man?

  3. Thing is, many anglican churches in other countries around the would are virulently homophobic, and have threatened to split away from the greater Anglican community. So Welby has to try and appease them, and doesn’t want to be the Archbishop who lost the church half it’s membership. Sucks but that’s why he said what he said

  4. Justin: an imaginary person says no.

Sandi: an actual person says yes.

I thought Christians aren’t supposed to be judgemental?

  5. Shouldn’t we be listing the Bible under fiction these days it may contain some very good values but it’s not relevent 2000 years later

  6. Don’t really know why the opinion of a grown adult that believes in a mystical sky fairy should be given any serious consideration honestly.

  7. > Jesus doesn’t mention sexuality at all. It clearly wasn’t a big deal for him. The only time I think he had anything like a conference was when he gathered 5,000 people for the Sermon on the Mount. That was when he talked about good trees bearing good fruit and bad trees bearing bad fruit. That’s the sort of message that would be great from you. Really simple. Just be a good person. That’s it. Jesus never even mentioned whether the tree was bent or not.

  8. I’m always surprised whenever anyone is surprised that a Christian made homophobic remarks. Christianity is absolutely homophobic, so it’s hardly a surprise what the Archbishop has said. Yes it’s spreading hate – that’s the point isn’t it?

I’m doubly surprised how anyone non-heterosexual can also be Christian. It makes no sense to me at all.

  9. Religion, an ‘organisation’ created purely to control people based on their fears from a time before science and understanding. It needs to be put to bed now.

  10. I’ve worked in a Christian church with openly homophobic views. They think their life is great, so God must approve of them, since if God didn’t approve they wouldn’t be “blessed”.

Then they would hold prayer meetings for the many parts of the world where Christians are a persecuted minority. Strange how having “proper Christian values” don’t protect ALL Christians, only those born into a prosperous region of a first-world nation.

    Funny, that.

  11. If you have to base your worldview on what is written in a book written by God knows who, God knows when, then very clearly you’re not in touch with your humanity.

This is no different to trans rights and abortion rights. If you identify with a role or an identity then expect to come into contact with people who are different to you. If you cling to your role identification and seek the moral high ground on that basis, you are creating the conflict through your attachment to role and identity.

  12. “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.” ~Matthew 7

Leading religious figure is a hypocrite and sinner, many such cases.

  13. “they have wanted to kill me on God’s behalf because although he may be omnipotent apparently he’s also very busy”

    This had me rolling

  14. The Church of England should be more focused on the real Christian issues, like why have Adam and Eve got belly buttons in every depiction of them?

I saw this in another Reddit comment a few days ago, and I can’t stop laughing about it.

  15. She’s an excellent human to have done this at all, but also made this such a light and entertaining read for the prick. She could have returned hate with hate but chose to be better. I like her very much.

  16. okay justin, don’t shag a man then? problem solved.

i really believe that this is a result of the church making christian’s feel uncomfortable about straight sex – it’s dirty and wrong and you should be ashamed (unless it happens within a tiny set of ‘rules’- so that means everybody else should feel the same way. you are uncomfortable with your own relationship with sex and can’t stand the idea that other people don’t have the same problem.

  17. If you’re going to allow such organisations (who are known to have views like this) like this to thrive in our country and we have some semblance of freedom of speech, then I don’t see how you can really complain about what they say and preach.

You know it’s made up nonsense, and that religion is slowly dying. Just tut and move on.

It’s either that, or you start to dismantle this organisations for hate speech. which one is it? You can’t have both.

  18. I’ll never understand why someone who claims to find gay sex disgusting obssesses over it so much…. Youd think the church would just put it to the back of their mind and not wanna go near the subject but nah… They seam absolutely obsessed with the subject.

Ultimately if you ain’t gay then you don’t need to worry about gay sex right?? Then again a lot of priests love wearing frocks… So maybe they are just in the closet about this stuff?

  19. What I find so striking about this whole situation is who the church claims moral superiority, but they find themselves on the wrong side of history time and time again. This is true both for the CoE and the Catholic Church (and in a different way for evangelical leaders).

  20. The original purpose of religion is to control the masses.
Scare them shitless while you fleece them.
Religion is a hoax and trick a slight of hand.
You can talk to god but dont ever say god spoke to you as this will probably get a spell in a hospital. There by proving the lie that is religion for if god can not speak to you then those who tell there is a god are lying.

  21. Fuck the Church of England. The uk public by and large have moved on will happily let people love who they wish.

No wonder the church is dying. For me, it can’t die quick enough.
