I’ve a 5km round trip to bring the kids to their preschool from September and I’m thinking of selling one of my cars and replacing it with a cargo ebike.

Anyone have any experience with these and what they’re like to use in the suburbs?

  1. Those smiles won’t last with the sideways rain we get in October. I see they have one with a canopy but you may as well get a car for that money.

I fear we just don’t have the climate for it… or our kids are too bloody soft to handle the weather.

  2. My sister and her husband bought a Babboe two years ago instead of a second car and they’re thrilled with it. Usually one of them will drop the kids to school on it and then head to work, they’re on a mix of bike lanes and main roads in their area and it’s about 5km to work with the schools in between. Their kids are 4 and 7 now and there’s plenty of room in there for them both aswell as school bags, shopping etc.

Her husband was always a keen cyclist but she hadn’t had a bike since we were kids so was a bit apprehensive but she wouldn’t go back now. The motor is ideal and the main learning curve they found was just embracing being out in it in all weathers – the kids have a rain cover so they’re cosy out whatever happens.

Edit – they’re in Cork and there are a few bike-meet groups there that gather regularly enough. There may be some local to you that you could go along to to see one in action before you buy.

  3. Wife got a Nihola last November. Big wide front and two wheels at the front.

I find the Baboe and single wheel front ones sturdier structurally, the two wheel front has you finding most potholes. My wife absolutely loves it though and seeing as she uses it the most that’s the type we have.

  4. We’ve an urban arrow. Similar to the one in the pic, it’s a Dutch brand. It’s pretty class. You can get really good rain gear for the cargo part and for yourself.

The only negative is that my older son is waaaay too big to fit in the cargo part now and has been since he was 9. So it’s really only for the smaller kids.

  5. They look heavy but practical, at least if it isn’t too windy. I cycle with two kids aged three and four but I just use a rear seat and front seat combo on my normal bike. It’s fine for now but they are getting a bit bigger so I cannot see it lasting much longer.
