Well, I’m feeling cautious now about that if this one ends up like the former contract of the century…
‘The UAE, one of the French defence industry’s biggest customers, also agreed to buy 12 Caracal military transport helicopters’
Money money money
FRANCE BAISE OUAIS
Interesting to see UAE leaning towards France i.e. EU. Not sure what the background of this deal is (there always is something).
UAE jumping directly to 2nd biggest Rafale owners behind France. If Qatar wants to turn that into a “who has the biggest one” contest, that would be great news for the French defense industry ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
How long before Biden sets up a diplomatic trip to the country ?
Holy shit! This is now the biggest arms deal ever signed by France, right?! 80 Rafale and 12 Caracal helicopters.
The opposition candidates in shambles… Seems like they won’t be able to use the sub fiasco with Australia as a sign of “French decline under Macron” in the elections’ discourse anymore, or at least not as effectively. Macron truly is a wizard. It took him 2 months and 2 weeks after AUKUS for a comeback. I don’t even know how he manages to get out of all these rabbit holes. 😂
EDIT: Of course….. Yemen is now trending on French Twitter…. They were going to find something else to complain about. Expected lmao. But hey, not like they are wrong to be fair. Morally, the deal is questionable.
France is the world’s 3rd largest weapons supplier (behind the US and Russia). It intends to acquire the 2nd spot on this list.
Always funny how people care about supporting possibly sketchy countries with arms until it helps them.
France sells arms to Saudi Arabia but still call out what they do in yemen. And most french people love it and cheer for it like they just personally made the sale. Enjoy the money though.
Like yea we care about not supporting bad wars and giving guns to bad people, but i mean… arms industry. Political points. I mean, come on.
People need to admit they care more about money than morals. Supporting some industry of national pride is more important than having morals and standing up for what is right. I get it. But people need to stop being delusional. The same people who care about human rights and democracy and womens rights and so on is selling, and thereby support a regime that is against all of that. This is the most clear clear of hypocrisy.
France has always been great standing up to bad wars. Refused to go into Iraq, things like that. At least better than most. But then you mention the french defense industry and immediately it’s this patriotic ape brain that takes over and everyone falls over themselves trying to sell as many bombs and jets to whoever wants to buy.
Small recap on Rafale exports to date:
Client | # | Notes
—|—|—-
UAE | 80 |
Egypt | 54 | Has announced its intention to purchase additional ~~tranches~~ units, potentially reaching 80-100 Rafales.
India | 36 | Has an option on 36 more. Rafale is expected to participate in a future tender for 114 fighters for the Air Force, and for another tender for the Indian Navy.
Qatar | 36 | Has an option on 36 more.
Greece | 24 | 12 of them second-hand.
Croatia | 12 | All of them second-hand.
Rafale is selling like popcorn
And just like that UAE will operate mirage 2000-9/F-16 block 60, Rafale F4 and soon F-35. Greece also operates mirage 2000-5 (almost identical to -9 minus some land attack capabilities), upgrades its fleet of F-16 to block 70/72 (very similar to block 60), already operates Rafale F3R with custom additions that F4 will bring and will also be purchasing F-35. The overlap is uncanny.
Why do they need that much aircrafts ?
Hate to say it, as I’m a huge fan of France and its autonomous defense industry, but these planes will be used to massacre innocent goat herders in Yemen.
I hope Finland is next!
My name is Rafael, and I approve of these posts.
As a yank I’m glad to see it, superb airframe and I happen to like the French arms industry to be a muscular as possible.
Don’t mind me, I’m just here for the salty British comments
Got to love when we sell military equipment to such places while explaining everyone how important human rights are
Imagine being the “Human Rights” country and selling war jets to a dictatorship currently wagging war to its neighbour, enslaving poor people to build stadiums, pissing on women’s rights …
Right, imagine how funny it would be.
Oh shit. 80 is actually huge. It’s not just aircraft but also equipement for them and servicing
Expecting a surprise visit from Biden, because the US are our oldest ally or something like that…
Good job to France. Rafale has really crapped on the Typhoon in sales.
I could see another 200-300 export orders after this easily.
What is the human rights record of UAE?
A Rafale in the hand is worth two F-35 in the bush
ITT: People suddenly supporting authoritarian regimes because it gives France some cash.
