I don’t know why, but I had the impression those in Norway with the proper authority would choose a more humane option.
Oh well, now one has to travel further to see one.
I would never expect this from a nice country like Norway… it are the humans who invade the territory of this animal by building everywhere! There were more humane options than this!
So sad to hear. Hvil i fred, Freya.
France can try and relocate a Beluga wale, but a country like Norway can’t even try and opt to kill the animal. Norway, on of the richest countries in the world would rather shoot it like a stray dog and justify it with muh people bad, it’s your fault you made me do it!!
I understand why they had to kill it, but why was it not an option to tranq and move the brave Walrus?
We kill and slaughter approximately 200 000 animals for food every day here in Norway. Some of them are cute too. (not counting sea food, even)
I’m really starting to believe that humans are parasites. This is disgusting. Shame on Norway.
Shame on you Norway, shame on you.
In your own announcement “we do not know whether there have been life-threatening situations”.
You just killed Freya, a rare and huge mammal, even though it did not harm anyone. Just in case.
“He did not specify how Freya was killed, but said it was “according to regulations.””
Not the most horrifying thing I’ve ever read, but wow… it’s in the top 10.
Noooo!
Give an animal a name and it’s suddenly big deal
hvorfor?
Understandable, when Ireland had a similar situation with an even bigger walrus they also saw no other option. Oh wait, they did.
Absolutely shameful. Euthanise the people getting close to Freya, not vice versa.
shame on you norway 😭
I don’t understand why everyone is defending this on the grounds that it’s hard to move a walrus. She wasn’t malnourished, she didn’t need moving. She was killed to avoid her hurting the public. Which is absolutely not a sufficient reason.
The people were warned she is dangerous. Nobody had to go near her. She wasn’t waltzing through the supermarket. If you’re dumb enough to fuck with a walrus, you deserve to get hurt. That’s your choice and your consequence. Why should she be murdered for it?
I feel like people are so arrogant about nature. As if nature has no right even reminding us of its existence. Just kill everything.
I’m frustrated by some of the patronising comments here… In the vein of ‘you just don’t get it’, or ‘you don’t understand Norway’…
For those of us who have ended up here from international News outlets (outside of Norway), why not expand further with some context about the situation, the country, the culture…? Perhaps comparisons to similar situations would be helpful?
At least give us non Norwegian residents *something* so we can build a more balanced viewpoint.
I wish people would make as much fuss about the wolves getting shot for less
This just shows you people don’t give a fuck beyond their own social media likes and selfies …
pathetic , maybe we do need authoritarians to tell us what to do …
This is so disgusting and heartbreaking that I can’t even wrap my mind around it. They said they thought Freya was unafraid of people and stuck around because “she liked being around people”, and look what fucking humans did to her. Fucking atrocious. They COULD have attempted relocation. DO BETTER NORWAY.
Noooo! Humans ruin everything. This is so sad. 😔
remember the wolf culling debates of 2016? they ended up killing most of the wolf population. it seems to be their favorite course of action. RIP, Freya <3
Her blood will forever stick to the hands of those who made this decision. I hope you will get what you deserve.
Pretty sure SeaWorld would have paid to have her. This was just unnecessary.
That fucking sucks. 😭
So let me get this straight, Norway: People make a wild animal an attraction, and when they won’t leave the animal alone, you kill the animal?
But some dude murders 77 people and he lives in cells bigger than some peoples apartments and will, at some in the next ten years or so, be free to walk around your streets again?
mAkeS pErFecT sEnSe👍🏽
Norway has a bad animal rights record.
EXPERTS SAY IT WAS THE RIGHT THING TO DO, STOP DEBATING.
Instead of putting it to sleep and haul the animal away to where it really belongs, they opted to kill the animal just because so many retarded humans couldn’t leave her alone!🤦🏻♂️
Misanthrope dislocure:
Humans are the problem, they need to restrict humans before harming innocent life. If humans are the problem, then higher thinking people with power need to stop being so permissive where innocent life is concerned. Or the just need to fuck off and let the walrus kill people so they learn a lesson.
What the hell is wrong with Scandinavians? by far the coldest people in Europe in every single way. Human rights on one side, yet still stabbing whales and Dolphins and illogically killing a Walrus on the other. Ireland and Wales actually assisted their Walrus, why couldn’t the Norwegians do the same? horrible.
This is perhaps one of the least important issues in the world, that has gotten the most exposure.
