What is a good thing to go with this? Mushy peas or is that too British?

There’s already peas in the pie, and carrots. You really don’t need anything else but if you want to add something maybe add broccoli or green beans
Mushy peas don’t go in shepherds pie ever, even in the UK.
The recipe seems a bit over the top. every house makes it different depending on what people like. my house only uses carrots in ours and we don’t make our own gravy just use Bisto gravy.
