It’s the long vacations. Gives you too much time to think about your situation.
That’s a lot, a lot lot. Next the pressure on those who are left will increase, and more will leave.
Omdat niemand zin heeft om 10 jaar interims te doen en van school naar school te hoppen zonder jobzekerheid. En ondertussen steeds de stomste klusjes te moeten doen terwijl de vastbenoemde leerkrachten genieten van hun vakantie.
Zoek maar eens naar vacatures voor leerkrachten: 6 werken 4 uur in school A, 8 weken 10 uur in school B…
Wie heeft daar nu zin in?

Teveel stress, weinig jobzekerheid, opkomst van sociale media, scholieren die voor minste reden hunne smartphone bovenhalen en beginnen filmen, slechte verloning qua werkuren, de trage digitalisering van het onderwijs etc..
Wie begint in anno 2021 zelf hier nog aan ?
En 1 op 3 jonge mensen in het algemeen blijft tegenwoordig gemiddeld ook niet langer dan 5 jaar hetzelfde doen, losstaand van de sector waarin ze zitten.
Can’t blame them, teaching must be super rewarding if you have children willing to learn. I am not sure that this is the case today anymore.
As someone who has nothing to do with educational profession, I have a feeling that teachers had some kind of authority before. Now, it seems like the tables have turned and nothing can be told to pupils. It’s rather pupils dictating if they want to listen/behave or not to their teachers.
High school gives me nightmares. You are treated like a little kid, even when you are 15 years old. Stand in line, raise your finger, having to learn new things 24/7. Compare that to a job in real life where you can slack of once in a while.
I’m in my fifth year and I’m thinking of leaving. Should I go for gold by risking my well-being and not be a typical ‘starting teacher’?
Ik heb jarenlang onderwijs gegeven, wel aan volwassenen. Vond het zeer fijn, de meeste studenten zijn erg gemotiveerd en het lag me wel. Het loon is niet slecht, als je enkel voor de klas gaat staan en je verhaal af dreunt. Maar als je rekening houdt met wat erbij komt: cursussen samenstellen en regelmatig aanpassen, examens afnemen en verbeteren dan ziet het er heel anders uit.
Maar de omgang met de directie: die arrogantie, die onbekwaamheid… met geen pen te beschrijven. Uiteindelijk hebben ze de opleiding die wij gaven *vergeten in te plannen.* 🤣 🤣 🤣

I’m in my fifth year, at a good school, where I’m appreciated for my work, and I’m still contemplating if I really want to do this, all because of external factors (the way society is going, how a lot of people view education, the heaps of administration, …). Not because I don’t love teaching. I do. Things need to change. Desperately. I feel like we are experiencing a long term brain drain and no one is batting an eye.
21 years and counting. Never considered leaving. The first SEVEN years are tough, but then you get the feel for it.
Iedereen lijkt een mening te hebben over wat misgaat in het onderwijs. Ook ik heb er mijn gedacht over. Maar over deze statistiek moeten we eerlijk zijn: die kan je doortrekken naar de meeste (westerse) landen en zegt bar weinig.
En vergeet ook niet de totaal belachelijke en weinig nutteloze lerarenopleiding!
I’ve been lucky… Had to work on three different schools but in the same city. A bit annoying but I realise I was in a good position as opposed to many of my colleagues…
I was a teacher last year. Now i manage a fitness club in Gent. Less vacation, but i have less stress now. Maybe i’ll go back to teaching one day, when teaching is a nice job again because right now the job sucks. Entitled students, unhelpful superiors, shitload of administration and barely fulltime options. Fuck that job

Why do teachers not teach privately? I think that it pays way better than being in front of a class or perhaps a private school pays better.
Strange, you’d think that with the massive amounts of vacation it would actually be an attractive job.
But then I think of all the preparation and work that needs to be done at home and I’m not sure I could deal with most of those annoying kids, let alone their parents.
