  1. Brâncoveanu came to power after paying a large sum of money to the Sultan (so big that he was nicknamed “the Golden Prince”). Afterwards however he started plotting with the Habsburgs and Russians against the Ottoman.

After the Ottomans defeated the Russians on the Prut River, Brâncoveanu’s trechery was unmasked. He was arrested and summoned to Constantinople along with his family were he will get executed. The Ottomans however promised him freedom if he converted to Islam which he rejected. Then they started executing his sons one by one hoping to intimidate him but he still rejected, claiming that “Jesus suffered worse for me”.

In the end he was also executed and the heads of him and his sons were displayed on pikes. However, the people of Constantinople (both Christian and Muslim) were angered by this, considering what happened to the Brâncoveanu family to be unfair. In order to prevent a riot, the Ottomans threw the heads and bodies into the Bosphorus where they were taken by Christian fishermen who gave them a proper burrial.

  2. And this is part of the reason why the Turks are the main bad guys of every history textbook here in Romania.
