‘I can’t be subsidising people’: Landlord fumes over lost income amid cost of living crisis

  1. >”I can’t be subsidising people” he told Shelagh, as he explained that the cost of living crisis has meant that he’s making “a lot less money” then he should have been making.
Answering Shelagh’s initial question, the caller said that he plans to increase rents by 10% across the board.
He concluded by stating that if the situation improved in future, he won’t necessarily bring the rent down again.
“I would charge as much as the market would bear, because I’m in the business to make money.”

He’ll increase rents wherever he can, because he deserves to make money, but he won’t say that he’d reduce them if costs fall, because he deserves to make money.

And some people wonder why many landlords are so despised.

  2. They are subsidizing *your mortgage* on thousands of properties.

You aren’t entitled to profit on top of that.

If market forces make your being a slumlord unprofitable, sell up and keep on walking.

  3. Every landlord (and company) that makes more than triple minimum wage from ownjng properties should have their assets seized and redistributed. There is no need for someone to have so many properties when they are in short demand and people can’t afford to live anymore

  4. Plenty of jobs in care going at the moment if they fancy a few more bob.

Course that would mean actually working but i’m sure they aren’t work-shy..

  5. > ‘I can’t be subsidising people’

Says man who lives off other people.

    > I can charge people whatever rent I want and they’ve got a choice of leaving or paying it. It’s as simple as that. I’m a business, I’m not social services.

The energy companiues can charge you whatever they want and you’ve got a choice of stopping supply or paying it. It’s as simple as that. They’re businesses, not social services.

Oh, right, you think it shouldn’t be the same when you’re the one paying. Quelle surprise.

  6. “All this year the energy bills have been going up and up and up and I can’t put the rents up until the end of their six-month agreement!” He told Shelagh Fogarty.

It’s not fair that my tenants are given a short window of protection by the contract I happily agreed with them!

  7. That landlord needs to realise there’s no more money to squeeze from there tenants so it’s a less money or no money choice.

  8. His entire existence is being subsidised by other people, because he was lucky enough to be born into a position to acquire property at the right time

  9. Saying the quiet part out loud. It’s okay when tenants are subsidising their landlords though. Peasants should know their place and all that.

  10. Hope she loses her homes she hasn’t lost any money! She’s not making as much! Change the tune! You’re not at risk of losing your home or livelihood are you! Profit over people every time! I’d bet money she votes tory! Profiteering everytime!

  11. Since when did “investment properties” become “guaranteed free money”. Oh no your investment might go down and you’ve invested more than you can afford to lose? No sympathy.

  12. Scamlords

I got banned from r/ukpersonalfinance for saying that landlords profit off of other people. They love graftlords over there.

  13. Imagine how the economy would thrive if we weren’t all expected to spend our entire lives working to pay rent or a mortgage on property which is massively overvalued to begin with.

  14. “I’m not getting any, no, ENOUGH return on my capital”

    “I’d buy more houses tomorrow”

This guy is a CUNT. He is what is wrong with this country. High quality accommodation while sharing bathrooms and kitchens? He’s in a fantasy world.

This is an INVESTMENT, it involves risk, you are not assured a return on your capital.

  15. I rent out a property, that was my home until I moved in with my partner, to some tenants, and I have to say I wouldn’t dream of increasing the rent at this time. Firstly, it’s incredibly unfair, my mortgage has not gone up. Secondly, my insurance and other costs have barely increased either. As I discussed with the tenants, I’ll only increase the cost if the interest rate goes up on the mortgage. The cost of energy is a horror I’m having to deal with myself, why would I inflict more pain on others? For an extra 1k!? Absurd.

My tenants are happy, and I am happy to have people who look after the house and pay their rent on time. They even asked me to keep them in mind if I wanted to the sell the property, honestly if I do sell I want them to have it.

This person who only wants to profit, has not considered the long term impact of their actions. Social responsibility is important if we want to see a better world, have some empathy.

  16. I just watched a 75 yo on LBC complain that he needs to get a Gas Safety check, EICR and an EPC rating.

He’s complaining because he’s legally required to provide a safe and moderately energy efficient place to live for his tenants.

  17. While are discussing not subsidising people…

Can someone remind me again how much does the bank of England hold to artificially inflate the housing market.

  18. At least he’s honest enough to admit what all the rest of them display by their actions.

Doesn’t stop him being a rat though

  19. “I can’t be subsidising people” says the man about the renters who pay his mortgage for the property they are living in

  20. I feel the same amount of sympathy for landlords as I do for leeches being ripped from their prey and getting crushed to death

Oh wait, they’re the same thing

  21. > All this year the energy bills have been going up and up and up and I can’t put the rents up until the end of their six-month agreement!

Energy prices have been trending upwards for a lot longer than 6 months, and he decided to offer tenancies with bills included anyway?

He’s made some shit business decisions and is now crying that the government isn’t giving him free money, cringe

  22. Landlords should be made to charge 50 percent of the equivalent mortgage that way everyone is a winner, the poor can afford to live and save some money to buy their own house and the owner still has an income and equity

  23. > Shelagh asked the caller by how much he plans to hike the rent of his tenants.

    > “Well first of all, I can charge people whatever rent I want and they’ve got a choice of leaving or paying it. It’s as simple as that. I’m a business, I’m not social services.”

Sensible question triggers massive overreaction. Very defensive.

He knows his position is morally repugnant.

  24. so you can’t subsisize people but you expect renters to subsidize you? get a job you fucking leech

  25. Says he can’t subsidise people who may struggle to put food on the table. Expects government to cover every penny of his lost profit, despite remaining profitable

  26. Why are people surprised time and time again. This is capitalism you fucks. You want this.

If you don’t want this then you know make your voice heard. Socialism.
