Doesn’t sound great? Aren’t we looking at electricity shortages and an energy crisis this winter?
And before the ‘you use reddit so you can’t criticise data centres’ crowd start shouting. I would rather not have reddit than have electricity blackouts during the winter.
Does anybody know who has a bit more knowledge than me as to whether it’s feasible for data centres to be net energy neutral or net energy positive?
Like is there any reasonable way they could provide energy back to the grid through heat or solar/wind renewables?
Surely that would be a positive planning requirement if feasible.
A data centre can use the same electricity as 50,000 households. The average Irish household is 2.7 people.
Greta Thunberg has entered the chat…….
Remember when some politician is trying to justify this by telling us to not forget how many people Amazon employ in Ireland that their very business has been the death of countless jobs up and down the country.
On an unrelated note, tis hot outside lads.
Wait aren’t we in an Amber warning for power?
And nothing from the Irish government about building new power stations to combat the rise of data centres, electric vehicles, more personal electronic devices with many more factors effecting our ever failing grid .. Cant wait for blackouts ….
As long as they use the most efficient, i.e. latest processors that have highest performance at lowest wattage, all is good.
I guess those will be exempt from the blackouts.
>Amazon has estimated that between 15 and 58 staff will work at the data centres over a 24-hour period, while up to 400 staff will be employed during the construction phase of the project.

>Official figures showed data centres accounted for 14% of all electricity demand in the Republic last year with Eirgrid estimating they could account for 29% by 2028.
That some shocking number to be honest
Do they run off their own power grid?
I just don’t get what the Irish government are getting from it. Data is the new oil, why would you just let someone setup data centers, why not setup our own.
The government will keep allowing this practice as the last thing they want is to rock the boat with the big multinational companies here

It’s terrific news for the economy and our coffers.
There long term investments too and the spin off from each location creates even more jobs .
Data centers add 14% to our carbon emissions
This is why we need nuclear power, then we can become the data centre kings of europe without making the planet suffer for it.
I have a personal suggestion
All individual data centres need to produce 80% of the power they use themselves and it has to be green energy.
Literally saves everyone money in the long run, they’ll do it because they won’t be able to build new ones if not and it puts less stress on the whole system
