Hello, would it be possible for me to obtain Luxembourgish nationality by option if I have legally resided in Luxembourg for the purpose of studying? I’ve lived in Luxembourg for 4 years, and I’m in the first year of the Master’s program.

I’ve left Luxembourg for about 9 months to complete my exchange in another country, so I didn’t have an address in Luxembourg for that period. I didn’t give back my residence permit though and when I came back I just extended it.

However, as I understand I left for more than 6 months my legal residence has been interrupted. But this shouldn’t be an obstacle for getting nationality in the sense that this absence will not reset the counter to zero, since only last year before the application should be uninterrupted?

Another useful doc on the law of the procedure: [https://ec.europa.eu/home-affairs/sites/default/files/18_luxembourg_pathways_to_citizenship_2019_en.pdf](https://ec.europa.eu/home-affairs/sites/default/files/18_luxembourg_pathways_to_citizenship_2019_en.pdf)

Is there anyone who was a student in Luxembourg and got their nationality in a similar situation as mine?

  1. Your interruption abroad does not reset the counter – indeed your final year must be uninterrupted. I know of a student that was in a similar situation and acquired citizenship (i.e. part of the years were while studying).
For nationality purposes studying does count as whole years (whereas for long term residence permit purposes only 50% of your studies count if I recall)

  2. I got mine after a simple demand, they require 7 years in the Luxembourgish school system, but I do not know if this applies to universities.

Go to the “bierger center” in the city on place guillaume, they’ll be able to advise you.

If you want to acquire the nationality the standard way, you’ll need to follow some civic instruction courses and pass a luxemburgish language test
